Lobsters are a delicious and luxurious delicacy, but cleaning them can be a daunting task for many. Understanding the proper steps to clean a lobster ensures that you get the most out of your meal while also respecting the animal’s life. Here are 15 steps on how to clean a lobster:
1. Gather your tools: You will need a sharp knife, kitchen scissors, cutting board, and a pot of water large enough to boil the lobster.
2. Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a rolling boil.
3. Add some salt to the boiling water for flavor.
4. Grasp the live lobster by its body, avoiding the claws.
5. Put the lobster in the boiling water headfirst and cover the pot with a lid.
6. Let the lobster cook until it turns bright red, usually around 8-10 minutes per pound.
7. Remove the cooked lobster from the pot using tongs and place it on a cutting board to cool for several minutes.
8. Start by removing the claws: Twist each claw off one at a time at their joints near the lobster’s body.
9. Crack open each claw shell with the back of your knife by lightly tapping it. Pull apart the shell to expose the claw meat.
10. Separate each part of the tail from its shell: Hold onto both sides of lobster’s tail and twist to remove it from its body completely.
11. Lay the tail flat onto your cutting board and make an incision down its center using your knife or kitchen scissors.
12. Gently peel away both sides of shell exposing the tail meat; remove any vein or innards if present.
13. Detach smaller legs from body by twisting them off at their joints one by one.
14.Check for any residual tomalley (green paste) within body cavity or near mouth parts. Be sure to clean and remove this matter from your lobster.
15. Rinse all cooked lobster pieces with water to eliminate any remaining bits of shell or vein. Pat them dry using a paper towel before serving.
After following these 15 steps, your lobster will be fully cleaned and ready to enjoy in your favorite recipes, like lobster rolls, bisque, or pasta dishes. Happy cooking!
