How to Change a Washer on a Garden Tap
A leaking garden tap can result in water wastage and increased utility bills. One of the most common causes of a dripping tap is a worn-out washer. Fortunately, changing the washer on a garden tap is a simple DIY task that does not require professional assistance. In this article, we will guide you through the steps to change the washer on your garden tap efficiently.
Tools and materials needed:
– New washer
– Adjustable wrench
– Screwdriver
– Plumber’s tape
Step 1: Turn off the water supply
First and foremost, switch off the water supply to the garden tap. Locate the stop valve for your home’s water supply, usually found under a kitchen sink or in a utility room, and turn it clockwise to close it.
Step 2: Remove the tap head
With the water supply turned off, open the tap fully to release any residual water in the pipe. Then, use an adjustable wrench to loosen and unscrew the tap head nut located beneath the handle. Once loosened, remove the tap head by pulling it upwards.
Step 3: Unscrew the spindle
Inside the removed tap head, you will see a spindle attached to it. The washer is located at the bottom end of this spindle. Using a screwdriver, unscrew and remove this spindle. Be sure not to lose any small parts as you do so.
Step 4: Replace the washer
Once you have removed the spindle, locate the old washer at its base. Use a screwdriver to pry out and remove this worn-out piece. Replace it with your new washer of appropriate size by sliding it onto the base of the spindle.
Step 5: Reassemble the tap
Now that you have replaced the old washer with a new one, it is time to reassemble your garden tap. Reverse your previous steps by screwing back the spindle into place, ensuring it is tight and secure. Replace the tap head over the spindle and screw back the tap head nut using the adjustable wrench.
Step 6: Apply plumber’s tape
To prevent any leaks around the connection, apply a few layers of plumber’s tape around the threads of the tap head nut.
Step 7: Test for leaks
Turn on your water supply at the stop valve and test your garden tap for functionality. Check for any leaks around the connection, and if necessary, tighten each part slightly with a wrench until no water is dripping.
Congratulations! You have successfully changed a washer on your garden tap, effectively preventing water wastage and high utility bills. By following these simple steps, you can easily maintain your garden taps and avoid unnecessary expenses caused by leaks or damage.
