How to Change a Rear Cassette: 15 Steps
Step 1: Gather the necessary tools
Before starting the process, gather the needed tools. Some essentials include a chain whip, an adjustable wrench, and a lockring remover tool.
Step 2: Shift to the smallest cog
Shift your bike gears so that the chain is on the smallest cog of your rear cassette.
Step 3: Remove the rear wheel
Release the quick release skewer or axle nuts before removing the rear wheel from your bike.
Step 4: Inspect and clean your cassette
Examine the cassette for any wear or damage. Clean it thoroughly using a soft brush and degreaser.
Step 5: Position chain whip
With your cassette facing up, wrap the chain whip around it. Position it in such a way that you can hold onto it firmly while turning it counterclockwise during removal.
Step 6: Attach lockring remover tool
Insert the lockring remover tool into the splines of the lockring. Ensure that it sits properly with all the teeth engaged.
Step 7: Secure wrench onto lockring tool
Using an adjustable wrench, secure its grip onto the lockring removal tool for additional leverage.
Step 8: Apply pressure and turn counter-clockwise
While holding onto the chain whip with one hand, apply pressure and turn the wrench counterclockwise with the other hand to loosen and remove the lockring.
Step 9: Remove lockring and cassette
Once loosened, carefully unscrew to remove both lockring and cassette. Keep all components together to avoid misplacing any parts.
Step 10: Clean hub body
Remove any remaining dirt or debris from your hub body before installing a new cassette using a soft cloth or brush with a degreaser if necessary.
Step 11: Match spline pattern on cassette and hub body
Align new cassette’s spline pattern and position it over the exposed hub body, carefully sliding it into place.
Step 12: Reinstall lockring
Thread the lockring back onto the hub by hand, then use the lockring removal tool and wrench to snugly tighten it down clockwise. Ensure it is firmly secured.
Step 13: Reattach rear wheel
Place your rear wheel back onto the bike frame, ensuring proper alignment of brakes and gears.
Step 14: Re-tighten quick release skewer or axle nuts
Tighten your quick release skewer or axle nuts appropriately to secure the rear wheel in place.
Step 15: Check chain position and gears
Ensure that your chain sits well on the smallest cog and that all gears shift smoothly. If required, make minor adjustments to your bike’s derailleur. Congratulations, you’ve successfully changed your bike’s rear cassette!
