How to Change a Dip Tube
A dip tube is an essential component in water heaters, which directs cold water from the top of the tank to the bottom where it gets heated. Over time, dip tubes can deteriorate or become damaged, reducing the efficiency of your water heater. In this article, we will guide you through the process of changing a dip tube to keep your water heater running at peak performance.
Tools and Materials:
1. Replacement dip tube
2. Pipe wrench
3. Teflon tape or joint compound
4. Garden hose
5. Bucket
6. Flat-blade screwdriver
Step 1: Turn off power and water supply
First, turn off the power supply to the water heater by switching off the breaker in your electrical panel. For gas heaters, turn off the gas valve.
Next, turn off the cold-water supply valve that leads to your water heater.
Step 2: Drain the tank
Attach a garden hose to the drain valve located near the bottom of your water heater tank and direct it into a bucket or out into your yard.
Open the pressure relief valve at the top of the tank by lifting its lever—this allows air to flow into the heater as it’s draining. Open the drain valve and allow water to empty into your designated area.
Once drained, close both drain and pressure relief valves.
Step 3: Disconnect cold-water input pipe
Locate the cold-water input pipe connected at the top of your water heater with “cold” labeled on it. Use a pipe wrench to remove this pipe by turning counterclockwise. If necessary, support the pipe with another wrench to prevent twisting or breaking.
Be prepared for some residual water dripping as you disconnect.
Step 4: Remove old dip tube
Inside the input pipe opening, you will find your old dip tube attached. Gently pull it by hand or use a flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pry it out of its fitting.
Step 5: Install new dip tube
Before installing the new dip tube, apply Teflon tape or joint compound to its threaded end—this ensures a watertight seal.
Align the new dip tube with the cold-water input pipe by marking the top of the tube at the height of the input pipe. Insert the dip tube into the tank and push it down until it reaches your marked height.
Step 6: Reconnect cold-water input pipe
Apply Teflon tape or joint compound to the threads of your cold-water input pipe. Use your pipe wrench to tighten it in place by turning it clockwise.
Step 7: Refill and restore power
Open the cold-water supply valve that leads to your water heater, allowing it to refill. Once full, close the pressure relief valve, turn on the power supply, and open a hot tap in your house to let air escape and ensure water is flowing once heated.
With these steps, you have successfully changed your dip tube. Now enjoy a more efficient hot water supply from your refreshed water heater!
