How to Cane a Chair
Cane chairs are classic, durable, and versatile pieces of furniture that can add charm and elegance to your home. With time and use, the cane may wear down, requiring you to repair or replace it. In this article, we will provide a step-by-step guide on how to cane a chair.
Materials and Tools Needed:
1. Strand cane (also known as split cane)
2. Wedges
3. A wooden peg
4. A pair of scissors or cutting pliers
5. A needle nose pliers
6. A ruler
7. A sanding block or fine sandpaper
8. A bucket of water
Step 1: Remove the Old Cane
Carefully remove the old cane from your chair using scissors or cutting pliers to cut it away from the frame. Be cautious not to damage the frame while removing the old strands.
Step 2: Prepare the Cane
Soak the new strand cane in a bucket of water for about 30 minutes to make it more pliable and easier to work with.
Step 3: Measure and Cut the New Cane
Measure the dimensions of your chair’s seat or back where you will be installing the new cane, including its width and length. Add at least two inches to both dimensions to ensure you have enough material when tightening the strands later. Cut the soaked cane accordingly.
Step 4: Start Weaving Vertical Strands
Begin weaving the vertical strands by inserting one end of a strand through a hole on one side of your chair frame, leaving about two inches extra hanging below (this will be tucked under later). Pull the strand taut and insert it through an opposite hole on the other side of your chair frame.
Step 5: Weave Horizontal Strands
After completing all vertical strands, begin weaving horizontal strands by inserting one end through a hole on the top of your chair frame and then repeating the process to the hole directly below. Ensuring the strands are taut and evenly spaced, you will weave over and under each vertical strand.
Step 6: Create Diagonal Strands
With both vertical and horizontal strands in place, begin weaving diagonal strands by inserting one end of a strand through a corner hole. Weave over and under each intersection as you work your way towards the opposite corner. Repeat this process for each of the other corners.
Step 7: Adjust and Trim Excess Cane
Once all strands are in place, use a wooden peg or needle nose pliers to push each strand closer together, ensuring the weave is tight and even. Remove any excess cane by cutting it close to the chair frame on the underside, using caution not to cut too close to prevent unraveling.
Step 8: Secure Cane with Wedges
Insert wedges into the channels around your cane seat or back to secure the weaving in place. Gently tap them down with a hammer for a snug fit. If necessary, trim any protruding ends of the wedges.
Step 9: Sand Edges
Lightly sand any rough edges around your cane seat or back using sanding block or fine sandpaper to ensure a smooth finish.
Your rejuvenated cane chair is now complete! Following these steps will give you a beautiful new piece of furniture while preserving the timeless appeal of caned chairs. Enjoy your newly caned chair as it adds charm and character to your home for years to come.
