How to calculate your golf handicap
Golf is a sport that welcomes players of all skill levels. However, one way to maintain a competitive edge and track your progress is to calculate your golf handicap. In this article, we will break down the process of calculating your golf handicap step by step.
A golf handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer’s potential playing ability based on past performance. It levels the playing field by allowing less skilled players to compete fairly against more proficient players.
Follow these steps to calculate your golf handicap:
1. Collect Your Scores
To calculate your golf handicap, you must first have at least five 18-hole round scores or ten 9-hole round scores. The more scores you have, the more accurate your handicap will be.
2. Find Course Ratings and Slope Ratings
For each round you played, note down its course rating and slope rating. These values are usually found on the scorecards provided by the course or online through their website. The course rating represents the expected score for a scratch golfer, while the slope rating indicates how difficult a course is for an average golfer compared to a scratch golfer.
3. Calculate Your Handicap Differentials
For each round, you need to calculate a handicap differential using the following formula:
Handicap Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score – Course Rating) x 113 / Slope Rating
The adjusted gross score is your actual score but adjusted for any maximums set by Equitable Stroke Control (ESC). The number 113 represents the average slope rating of golf courses.
4. Choose Lowest Handicap Differentials
Depending on how many eligible scores you have, choose the best (lowest) differentials based on the following table:
– 5 or 6 eligible scores: Keep best 1
– 7 or 8: Keep best 2
– 9 or 10: Keep best 3
– 11 or 12: Keep best 4
– 13 or 14: Keep best 5
– 15 or 16: Keep best 6
– 17: Keep best 7
– 18: Keep best 8
– 19: Keep best 9
– 20: Keep best 10
5. Calculate Your Handicap Index
Average the lowest differentials from the previous step and multiply by o.96 to find your handicap index. Do not round this number; truncate to one decimal place.
Handicap Index = (Sum of Lowest Handicap Differentials / Number of Differentials) x 0.96
6. Find Your Course Handicap
Finally, to obtain your actual handicap for a specific course, use the following formula:
Course Handicap = (Handicap Index x Slope Rating) /113
Round the result to the nearest whole number, and you have your course handicap.
By calculating your golf handicap, you can monitor your progress as a player and enjoy friendly competition with golfers of varying skill levels. Be sure to periodically update and recalculate your handicap as you play more rounds and improve your game.
