How to calculate tile square footage
When planning to install new tiles for your home renovation or tiling a brand new space, it’s crucial to calculate the tile square footage accurately. This calculation helps you determine the number of tiles required, ultimately saving you both time and money. In this article, we’ll walk you through the steps on how to calculate tile square footage.
1. Measure the area you wish to tile
First, identify the length and width of the area you wish to cover with tiles – this could be a floor, wall, or backsplash. Use a tape measure to measure each dimension in inches or feet – depending on your preference. Note these measurements down.
2. Calculate the total square footage
Next, multiply the length by the width to get the total square footage. For example, if your room measures 12 feet in length and 10 feet in width:
Total square footage = Length × Width
Total square footage = 12 ft × 10 ft
Total square footage = 120 sq ft
3. Determine tile size
Tiles are available in various sizes – from small mosaic pieces to large slabs. Choose a tile size suitable for your project and note its dimensions (length and width) in inches or feet.
4. Calculate each tile’s square footage
Multiply the length and width of one tile to get its square footage. For example, if your chosen tile measures 1 foot (12 inches) by 1 foot (12 inches):
Tile square footage = Length × Width
Tile square footage = 1 ft × 1 ft
Tile square footage = 1 sq ft
5. Divide total area by individual tile area
To determine how many tiles you need, divide the total square footage of your project area by the square footage of one tile:
Number of tiles needed = Total square footage ÷ Tile square footage
Number of tiles needed = 120 sq ft ÷ 1 sq ft
Number of tiles needed = 120
6. Include an additional percentage for waste
When cutting or trimming tiles to appropriately fit your space, some will inevitably be wasted. It’s essential to account for this possibility when purchasing materials. A recommended rule of thumb is adding an additional 10% to your total tile count.
Tiles needed (including waste) = Number of tiles needed × 1.10
Tiles needed (including waste) = 120 × 1.10
Tiles needed (including waste) = 132
With these steps, you should now have an accurate count of the number of tiles required for your project. Make sure to gather all necessary tools and materials before commencing your tiling work, and enjoy a beautiful, newly tiled space!
