How to calculate binding for a quilt
Quilting is a craft that has been cherished throughout history, and creating beautiful quilts still remains a popular pastime today. One critical step in the quilting process is calculating and applying the binding, which gives your quilt a clean, finished look. The binding serves as both a practical way of holding together the edges of your quilt and an aesthetic component that can complement your quilt’s design. In this article, we will outline how to calculate binding for a quilt with ease.
1. Measure your quilt.
First, you need to measure the dimensions of your quilt to get an accurate idea of how much binding you will need. Lay your quilt flat on the floor or a table and use a measuring tape or ruler to measure the length and the width of your quilt.
2. Calculate the perimeter of your quilt.
Once you have the length and width measurements, it’s time to calculate the perimeter of your quilt. To do so, add the length and width together, then multiply by 2:
Perimeter = (length + width) x 2
This calculation gives you the total distance around all sides of your quilt.
3. Determine the desired width of your binding strip.
Next, decide on the finished width of your binding strip. A typical binding width is between 1/4″ and 3/4″, depending on personal preference and quilt style. Remember that you need to multiply this number by four since the binding will be folded in half twice for durability:
Binding Strip Width = Desired Finished Width x 4
4. Calculate total length needed for binding strips.
Now that you know how wide your binding strip needs to be, calculate how many fabric strips you will need to create:
Total Length Needed = Quilt Perimeter + extra allowance (10-12 inches)
Adding an extra allowance ensures there is enough material for joining strips or making mitered corners.
5. Determine the number of fabric strips needed.
Fabric typically comes in widths of 44″-45″. To figure out how many strips you need to cut, divide the total length needed for binding by the fabric width:
Number of Strips = Total Length Needed / Fabric Width
Always round up to the nearest whole number since it’s better to have extra binding rather than not enough.
6. Calculate fabric yardage required for binding.
Lastly, determine how much fabric you need to purchase for your quilt binding. Multiply the number of strips needed by the binding strip width and then divide by 36 (the number of inches in a yard):
Fabric Yardage = (Number of Strips x Binding Strip Width) / 36
This calculation gives you an estimate of how much fabric, in yards, you will need for creating your quilt’s binding.
With these straightforward steps, you can accurately calculate the binding required for your quilting project. Properly measured and applied binding not only protects your quilt’s edges but contributes to its overall beauty and longevity.
