7. Screws (wood screws, 1 1/2″ – 2″ length)

9. Lumber (typically 2×4, 2×6, or 1×12 boards)

Step 1: Plan & Measure

Measure your bunk bed’s opening width and decide on a suitable width for your stairs. Consider the height from floor to the top of the lower mattress as well as the number of steps you’ll need.

Step 2: Build the Stair Stringers

Cut two stair stringers out of 2×6 or 2×4 boards according to your measurements using a circular saw or jigsaw. Use a carpenter’s square to ensure accurate angles.

Step 3: Cut the Steps & Riser Boards

Using a circular saw or jigsaw, cut the steps and riser boards from 1×12 lumber as per your previous measurements.

Lay one stringer on a flat surface with the notch side up and apply wood glue to each notch. Position the steps and riser boards into the notches, then secure them using screws. Repeat for the other side.

Attach your assembled stairs to the bunk bed frame using screws. Make sure they’re level and securely attached before adding any weight.

Step 7: Add Storage ( optional)

Create storage by installing shelves or drawers beneath each step, making use of the staircase’s open space.

Step 8: Finish

If desired, add paint or stain to your stairs to match your bunk bed’s existing color or decor. Allow ample drying time before use.
