How to Build Bleachers: 9 Steps
Building bleachers for your sports or recreational facility can provide a comfortable and safe place for spectators to sit and enjoy games or events. In this article, we’ll outline nine steps to help you construct sturdy and well-built bleachers.
Step 1: Determine the Capacity and Design
Start by deciding how many people your bleachers should accommodate and what type of design you prefer. This will help you determine the required materials and overall dimensions of the structure.
Step 2: Choose the Materials
Select durable materials like metal or treated wood that will withstand weather conditions and stand up to regular use. Ensure the material meets safety standards and is appropriate for outdoor use if building outdoor bleachers.
Step 3: Prepare the Site
Choose a level area with adequate drainage for your bleachers. Clear any debris, vegetation, or obstacles from the site and ensure it meets any required safety guidelines or building codes.
Step 4: Construct the Supports
Start by building the vertical supports that will hold up the benches or seating platforms. Use heavy-duty brackets, metal posts, or pressure-treated wood for this purpose. Space supports evenly apart so they can be easily attached to horizontal support beams later.
Step 5: Build Horizontal Support Beams
Attach two horizontal support beams—one at the top and one at the bottom—between each pair of vertical supports. These beams will serve as the foundation for your seating platforms.
Step 6: Construct Seating Platforms
Create individual seating platforms using planks of treated wood or metal bars. Attach these platforms on top of both horizontal support beams using galvanized screws. Make sure there is an equal amount of space between each platform so spectators can comfortably sit down.
Step 7: Add Steps and Railings
Ensure safety by adding steps leading up to the seating platforms as well as sturdy railings along both sides of your bleacher. Make sure the steps are evenly spaced and have no gaps or uneven surfaces where people could trip.
Step 8: Install Seating
Attach bench seating to the seating platforms using sturdy anchors (for metal benches) or heavy-duty screws (for wooden benches). It’s essential to space the benches evenly to provide adequate legroom for spectators.
Step 9: Inspect and Test
Before opening your bleachers to the public, thoroughly inspect the entire structure for any potential safety hazards. Test the stability of the seating platforms, steps, and railings by applying weight and pressure. Make any necessary adjustments or repairs before use.
By following these nine steps, you’ll have successfully built functional and safe bleachers for spectators at your facility. Remember to perform regular maintenance on your bleachers to ensure their longevity and keep them in good condition for years to come.
