How to Build a TARDIS Replica
The TARDIS, an iconic symbol of Doctor Who, is a time-traveling spaceship and an absolute must-have for any Whovian’s collection. This article will guide you through the process of creating your own TARDIS replica, bringing the magic of the Doctor into your home or backyard.
Materials and Tools Needed:
1. Plywood sheets (thickness: 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch)
2. Wooden boards (2×4 and 1×4)
3. Wood screws
4. Wood glue
5. Door hinges
6. Blue paint (preferably acrylic)
7. White paint (preferably acrylic)
8. Paintbrushes
9. Glass or plexiglass sheets
10. Door handle
11. Screwdriver
12. Jigsaw or circular saw
13. Sander or sandpaper
Step 1: Plan and Design Your TARDIS
Begin by researching images and designing your TARDIS replica with accurate dimensions, keeping in mind that you can make adjustments depending on your preference or material availability.
Step 2: Construct the TARDIS Base
Using the 1/2 inch plywood, cut four pieces to build the base frame with correct dimensions using a jigsaw or circular saw. Assemble them into a square with wooden boards inside as support beams, using wood glue and screws to hold all together.
Step 3: Build the Walls
Cut four pieces of the 1/4 inch plywood with accurate measurements for each side of your TARDIS replica. Add windows and door openings accordingly by cutting out relevant shapes from plywood using your saw.
Next, create the window panes by cutting wooden slats to fit within the provided openings, fixing them in place with glue. Finally, attach glass or plexiglass on top of these wooden frames.
Attach each wall to the base structure, using wood screws to secure them firmly.
Step 4: Construct the Roof
Cut and assemble additional pieces of plywood to construct a sloping roof structure that fits over the top of your TARDIS replica. Attach the roof to the walls by using wood screws drilled through its edges.
Step 5: Adding Details
For a more authentic look, cut thin wooden boards into rectangular strips and attach them as panels around each police box panel. Create “POLICE BOX” signage with vinyl letter stickers or hand-paint them yourselves on top of another wooden board, attaching it above the door of your TARDIS.
Step 6: Painting
Sand all surfaces evenly for a smooth finish. Apply at least two coats of blue acrylic paint (waiting until each coat is dry before adding another) on all walls, panels, and roof pieces. Paint windows and “POLICE BOX” sign with white acrylic paint.
Step 7: Installing Door Hinges and Handle
Attach door hinges to one side of your TARDIS door opening, attaching the opposite side to the cut-out door plywood piece you made in Step 3. Then, install a door handle by drilling holes and fastening screws according to handle specifications.
Step 8: The Final Touches
Your TARDIS replica is now complete! Place it in your desired location or add battery-operated lights inside to create a stunning display for fellow Doctor Who fans.
Although building a TARDIS replica may seem daunting at first, following these steps and guidelines will make the process more manageable. Unleash your inner Whovian carpentry skills and bring a piece of this fascinating TV series right into your home!
