1. Gather your materials: To build a squirrel house, you will need wood planks or sheets, galvanized screws or nails, wood glue, a saw, drill, gloves, safety goggles, and a measuring tape.
2. Choose the right wood: Use untreated cedar or pine for the squirrel house, as these materials are weather-resistant and safe for squirrels.
3. Measure and cut the wood: Cut two identical pieces of wood for the roof (12″x 6″), four pieces for the sides (10″ x 5″), and one piece each for the floor (9″ x 4″) and back wall (10″ x 5″).
4. Design an entrance hole: Draw an entrance hole on one of the side pieces, about 3 inches from the bottom. The hole should be roughly 2 to 3 inches in diameter.
5. Cut the entrance hole: Use a jigsaw or hole saw to carefully cut out the entrance hole.
6. Assemble the base: Attach one side piece to the bottom by applying wood glue and inserting screws/nails at corners. Repeat with other side piece.
7. Add back wall: Apply wood glue to edges of back wall and attach it between side walls at a right angle. Secure with screws/nails.
8. Sand edges: Smooth any rough edges using sandpaper to ensure that squirrels do not get injured when entering or exiting their new house.
9. Attach roof pieces: Line up roof pieces along top edge of side panels, ensuring they extend slightly beyond walls. Apply glue along top edges of walls and secure roof with screws/nails.
10. Ventilate squirrel house: Drill a few small air holes on top of each side panel to provide proper ventilation for your furry friends.
11. Attach support beam: Cut a small support beam about 4 inches long and attach it between roof panels at the peak using wood glue and screws/nails. This will provide extra stability.
12. Apply a finish: If desired, apply a water-based stain or paint to the exterior of the squirrel house to improve appearance and protect the wood. Avoid using harsh chemicals or oils that may harm squirrels.
13. Install the squirrel house: Find a tree or high location safe from predators and secure the squirrel house with galvanized screws or strong zip ties. The entrance should face away from prevailing winds.
14. Maintain the squirrel house: Check for damage and clean out the interior occasionally to ensure a healthy living space for your local squirrels.
With these 14 steps, you have successfully built a squirrel house that provides a safe, warm, and inviting space for squirrels to nest and rest. They’ll surely appreciate your efforts in enhancing their habitat!
