How to Build a Gallows: 13 Steps
A gallows is a historical structure used for public executions, specifically hangings. While it is no longer used in modern times, it remains a symbol of dark history and can be created as part of stage props or themed events. In this article, we will walk you through building a simple wooden gallows in 13 steps.
Materials and Tools Required:
1. Wood planks
2. Wood screws
3. Hammer
4. Saw
5. Drill with drill bit
6. Measuring tape
7. Pencil or marker
8. Sandpaper
9. Rope
Step 1: Plan your dimensions and design
Before you begin, it’s essential to plan the dimensions of your gallows regarding height, width, and length.
Step 2: Gather the materials
Having decided on the specifications, acquire wood planks and other necessary components according to your design and dimensions.
Step 3: Cut the wood planks to length
Measure the planks using a measuring tape and mark them for cutting according to your design. Use a saw to cut them to the desired lengths.
Step 4: Create the frame
Start by constructing the rectangular base frame using two base planks parallel and at least two connecting planks perpendicular to them. Attach these by screwing them together in each corner.
Step 5: Build upright posts
Cut four planks for the upright posts which will form the tall structure on either side of the base frame. The posts support both sides of the crossbeam, from which the rope hangs.
Step 6: Attach upright posts
Attach each of these four planks vertically on each corner of your base frame by screwing them into position.
Step 7: Connect the upright posts with horizontal supports
Measure and cut horizontal supports for added stability and attach between each standing post on both sides of the structure.
Step 8: Mount the crossbeam
Measure and cut a plank for the crossbeam, which will span horizontally between the two side structures. Attach with screws at either end to the top of both outer upright posts.
Step 9: Add diagonal bracing
To strengthen the structure further, attach diagonal planks from the lower corner of the side frames to their respective horizontal support beams. Screw these at both ends.
Step 10: Sand any rough surfaces
Using sandpaper, smooth out any rough areas on the gallows to ensure that there are no splinters or jagged edges.
Step 11: Install an optional trapdoor
If desired, install a trapdoor in the base frame by cutting a square from one of the base planks, then attaching hinges and stoppers.
Step 12: Attach the rope
Tie your rope around the crossbeam at one end and adjust it to hang at your desired height.
Step 13: Perform a safety check
As a final measure, make sure all screws are tight and that all elements are securely attached. This gallows is not designed for actual use, so it should never be used for lifting or supporting people in any capacity.
Your gallows is now complete! Remember, this structure is intended for stage props or themed events and should never be used for actual hangings.
