How to Bind a Quilt: 10 Steps
Binding a quilt is the final step in the quilting process, giving your quilt a polished and professional finish. This article will guide you through the ten essential steps to bind a quilt.
1. Choose the binding material: First, decide on the material to use for your binding. A durable, contrasting fabric complements the quilt design well. Many quilters prefer using a bias-cut binding made from quilting cotton for added durability.
2. Measure and cut your binding strips: Measure the perimeter of your quilt and add 12 inches to the total length to calculate the necessary fabric needed for binding. Cut strips of fabric (commonly 2.5 inches wide) perpendicular to the selvage edge.
3. Piece the strips together: Sew the strips together at a 90-degree angle using a diagonal seam to create one continuous strip of binding fabric. Trim away excess fabric and press seams open.
4. Prepare binding strip: Fold your binding strip in half lengthwise, with wrong sides together, and press with an iron.
5. Attach binding to quilt: Beginning at the center of one side, align raw edges of the binding strip with raw edges of your quilt top (right sides facing), leaving an 8-inch tail unattached at the beginning.
6. Sew the binding: Use a walking foot to sew along the edge with a 1/4-inch seam allowance from one corner to another, stopping approximately 1/4 inch before reaching each corner. Backstitch at both ends.
7. Create mitered corners: Fold binding away from quilt top at each corner, creating a 45-degree angle toward you. Fold it back onto itself even with edge of quilt and continue sewing from corner to corner along all four sides.
8. Join ends of binding strip: Trim one end of your starting tail straight across, leaving approximately 4 inches overlap. Join the two ends of your binding strips with a diagonal seam, trim excess fabric, and press seam open. Finish sewing the binding in place.
9. Fold and secure binding: Fold the binding over to the back side of the quilt so folded edge covers raw edges and the seam line on the back. Use pins or clips to secure the binding along all four sides of the quilt, making sure to neatly fold mitered corners.
10. Hand stitch or machine stitch: Use a hand needle and thread, or a narrow zigzag stitch on your sewing machine, to sew around the perimeter of your quilt, securing the folded binding in place.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully bound your quilt, completing your work of art with a clean, professional finishing touch.
