How to Back Up Your Mac to Time Machine or iCloud
As a Mac user, backing up your computer is a critical task. Not only does it protect all your important data, but it can also be a lifesaver if your computer crashes or is lost or stolen. In this article, we’ll discuss two ways to back up your Mac: using Time Machine and iCloud.
Backing Up with Time Machine
Time Machine is an automatic backup feature that’s built into macOS. By connecting an external hard drive to your Mac, you can use Time Machine to back up your entire system. Once set up, Time Machine will backup your data hourly, daily, and weekly, making sure you have the most current and complete version of your files.
Here’s how to set up Time Machine:
1.Connect an external drive to your Mac.
2.Open System Preferences by clicking its icon in the Dock or by clicking the Apple menu and selecting “System Preferences.”
3.Click on “Time Machine.”
4.Click the “Select Backup Disk” button.
5.Choose the external drive you connected earlier.
6.Check the box next to “Back Up Automatically.”
Time Machine will now begin backing up your Mac to the external drive. If you need to restore your data, you can use the Time Machine app to navigate through previous backups and recover individual files or your entire system.
Backing Up with iCloud
If you want a more hands-off approach to backing up your Mac, iCloud might be a better option. iCloud is a cloud-based storage service offered by Apple, which means that your data is stored remotely and can be accessed from any device that’s signed in to your iCloud account.
To back up your Mac with iCloud:
1.Click the Apple menu and select “System Preferences.”
2.Click on “Apple ID” and sign in with your Apple ID and password.
3.Select “iCloud” from the System Preferences window.
4.Check the box next to “iCloud Drive” to enable it.
5.Check the box next to “Desktop & Documents Folders” to include those files in your iCloud backup.
Your Mac will now upload your files to iCloud, and you can access them from any device signed in to your iCloud account.
Which Option is Best?
Both Time Machine and iCloud offer reliable ways to back up your Mac. Time Machine is a great option if you want complete control over your backups, and you want to keep your data stored locally. On the other hand, iCloud is ideal if you want a hands-off approach, and if you want to access your data from multiple devices.
