How to Apply Henna to Hair
Henna is a natural dye made from the leaves of the Lawsonia inermis plant, commonly known as the henna tree. It has been used for centuries to color hair, skin, and nails in various cultures around the world. Applying henna to hair can be a fun and chemical-free way to achieve rich, vibrant color and promote hair health. In this article, we will explore the steps you need to follow in order to apply henna to your hair successfully.
1. Choose the right henna
There are various types of henna available on the market. Make sure to select pure, natural henna with no added chemicals. You may also choose henna with added ingredients like amla, shikakai, or indigo for specific hair care benefits or to achieve different shades.
2. Prepare the henna paste
To begin, you’ll need:
– Henna powder
– A non-metal bowl
– A non-metal spoon
– Water or an acidic liquid (lemon juice, apple cider vinegar)
– Optional additives such as essential oils, yogurt or coffee
In your non-metal bowl, mix together the henna powder with water or an acidic liquid until it forms a smooth paste. The consistency should resemble that of yogurt. Adding acidic liquid can help the dye release better, resulting in deeper color. You can also add hair-loving ingredients like essential oils, yogurt or coffee for enhanced conditioning benefits.
3. Let the paste sit
Cover your henna paste and let it sit at room temperature for a minimum of 4 hours or up to overnight. This gives the dye time to release and ensures richer color payoff when applied to your hair.
4. Prepare your work area and yourself
Before you begin applying henna to your hair:
– Gather gloves, an old towel or newspaper, shower cap or plastic wrap, and hair clips or ties
– Prepare your work area by laying down newspaper or an old towel to catch any spills or drips
– Put on an old shirt that you won’t mind getting stained
– Brush or comb your hair to remove any knots
5. Apply henna to your hair
It’s time to apply the henna to your hair!
– Section your dry or damp hair (whichever you prefer) into 4 parts
– Apply the henna paste generously starting from the roots, working through each section of your hair, ensuring full coverage. Use a brush or gloved hands for even application.
– As each section is completed, twist it up and clip it in place
6. Cover and wait
Once all sections are covered with henna:
– Wrap your head with a shower cap or plastic wrap to prevent the paste from drying out and protect your surroundings from stains
– Leave the henna on your hair for at least 1 hour for a lighter color, and up to 4 hours for a darker hue. The longer you wait, the richer the color.
7. Rinse without shampooing
It’s time to rinse off the henna paste!
– Remove the shower cap or plastic wrap
– Using lukewarm water, rinse your hair thoroughly until the water runs clear. It may take some time, so be patient.
– Avoid shampooing for at least 24 hours as it might alter the final color result. You can use conditioner while rinsing if needed.
8. Admire and maintain your color
Your henna-treated hair should now have a beautiful, natural-looking hue! To maintain this vibrant color:
– Wait at least 48 hours before shampooing.
– Use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners designed for color-treated hair.
