How to Apply Annie Sloan Wax: 11 Steps
Annie Sloan wax is a versatile and easy-to-use finishing product that can be applied on furniture, walls, or any surface you’d like to give a beautiful, long-lasting finish. Follow these 11 steps to apply Annie Sloan wax like a pro.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Before you begin, gather your materials: Annie Sloan wax (either clear or dark), a wax brush, lint-free white cloth (old t-shirts work great), wax paper, and a soft buffing brush.
Step 2: Clean the Surface
Ensure the surface is clean and dry. Gently wipe any dust or dirt off with a clean cloth. For stubborn stains or grime, use mild soapy water and allow it to dry completely.
Step 3: Apply the Chalk Paint
If applying over Annie Sloan chalk paint, make sure it has thoroughly dried first—typically 24 hours for most surfaces. However, consult your specific paint instructions for exact drying times.
Step 4: Load Your Brush
Dip your wax brush into the Annie Sloan wax container, picking up a small amount of wax. You don’t need much—a little goes a long way.
Step 5: Work in Small Sections
Start by working in small sections of your piece (around 1 square foot at a time). Apply the wax using circular motions, covering the entire area evenly. Then, smooth out the wax with long sweeping strokes going in the direction of the wood grain or pattern on your surface.
Step 6: Remove Excess Wax
Use your lint-free cloth to remove any excess wax immediately after applying it to each section. Fold and refold your cloth as needed to create a clean surface for wiping away excess.
Step 7: Repeat Steps 4–6
Continue working in small sections, applying wax and removing excess until the entire piece is covered.
Step 8: Allow to Dry
Allow the wax to dry for 10–15 minutes. For a smoother finish, you can also apply a second coat of clear wax, following the same procedure.
Step 9: Apply Dark Wax (Optional)
If you want to add depth or age your piece, apply Annie Sloan dark wax over the clear wax in the same manner as before. Remember to work in small sections.
Step 10: Remove Excess Dark Wax
Use a clean cloth to remove any excess dark wax, leaving it only in crevices and areas where you want darker shading.
Step 11: Buff to Finish
Wait at least 24 hours before using a soft buffing brush or lint-free cloth to gently buff your surface, going in the direction of the wood grain or pattern on your piece. This will give your piece a soft, desirable finish.
By following these 11 steps, your surfaces will showcase expertly applied Annie Sloan wax for a beautiful and long-lasting finish.
