How to Add Oil to Your Car
Regular oil checks and timely oil changes are crucial for maintaining your car’s engine performance and longevity. In this article, we will guide you through the simple process of adding oil to your car.
1. Gather the necessary supplies:
– Engine oil (check your owner’s manual for the recommended type and grade)
– Funnel
– Paper towels or clean cloth
– Disposable gloves (optional)
2. Park your car on a level surface:
Ensure that your car is parked on level ground to get an accurate reading of the oil level.
3. Turn off the engine:
Turn off your vehicle’s engine and allow it to cool down for at least 5-10 minutes so that the oil settles in the engine.
4. Locate the engine oil dipstick:
Open your car’s hood and locate the oil dipstick, which can usually be found near the engine. If you’re unsure, consult your owner’s manual for its exact location.
5. Check the oil level:
Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a paper towel or cloth. Reinsert it into its compartment and pull it out again to read the oil level. The dipstick usually has two marks (minimum and maximum) indicating acceptable levels of engine oil.
6. Add oil if necessary:
If the oil level is below the minimum mark or looks close to it, carefully unscrew the oil filler cap (usually located near or on top of the engine) and insert a funnel to prevent spills.
7. Pour in new oil:
Slowly pour in the recommended engine oil, periodically checking the dipstick as you pour to ensure that you do not overfill. Be patient; pouring too quickly might lead to spills and an inaccurate reading of how much oil has been added.
8. Recheck and finish up:
After adding a sufficient amount of new engine oil, keep checking the dipstick until the oil level falls between the minimum and maximum marks. Close the oil filler cap securely, remove the funnel, and wipe any spills using a cloth or paper towel.
9. Dispose of used oil properly:
Always dispose of used engine oil at an authorized waste disposal facility or take it to a local auto service shop that offers recycling services.
Adding oil to your car’s engine is not only essential maintenance but also a straightforward process. Regularly check your vehicle’s oil level and change it as recommended in your owner’s manual to ensure your car runs efficiently and lasts longer.
