Braiding is an art form that has been practiced for thousands of years. One popular braiding technique involves adding hair extensions or synthetic hair to create thicker, longer, and more intricate braids. This process is known as adding hair to braids. In this article, we will explore the step-by-step process of adding hair to braids.
1. Preparation:
Before you begin, gather all the necessary materials, such as a wide-tooth comb, hair clips, hair ties, and the synthetic or natural hair extensions you’ll be using.
2. Section your natural hair:
Divide your natural hair into sections depending on the desired size and style of the braids. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle and smooth out each section of hair.
3. Measure the synthetic/extension hair:
Hold the synthetic or extension hair in both hands and measure it so that it matches the length you want for your braids. Fold the hair in half to create a loop that will be used when attaching it to your natural hair.
4. Begin braiding:
Hold a section of your natural hair between your thumb and index finger while gripping the synthetic/extension loop with those same fingers behind your natural hair. Divide your natural hair into three parts: left, middle, and right strands.
5. Braiding with added hair:
Cross the left strand of your natural hair over the middle strand while still holding onto the looped synthetic/extension hair in place. The left strand now becomes the new middle strand.
Next, cross the right strand over the new middle strand (previously left) while maintaining your hold on all strands including the added synthetic/extension pieces.
6. Incorporate synthetic/extension hair:
Now it’s time to incorporate the additional pieces of synthetic/extension hair into your braid. As you continue to cross strands over each other, you will use your fingers to keep the strands separated and balanced. Begin to pull in the synthetic/extension hair as you cross strands over each other, making sure to pick up and incorporate equal amounts with each crossover.
7. Continue braiding:
Repeat the process of crossing strands and incorporating the synthetic/extension hair until you’ve reached the end of your natural hair and synthetic/extension hair has been entirely woven in. Remember to keep even tension throughout and adjust any pieces that feel too loose or too tight.
8. Secure the end:
Once you arrive at the end of the braid, hold the final strands together tightly and tie securely using a rubber band or hair tie. Trim any excess hair or frayed ends for a neat finish.
9. Repeat for all sections:
Follow these steps for all sections of your natural hair, ensuring consistent sizing and tension throughout all your braids.
10. Final touch-ups:
After completing all braids, use a non-greasy product like mousse or hairspray to hold them in place. You can also use edge control products for a sleek look around your hairline.
By following these steps, you can easily add hair to your braids for a stylish and unique appearance. This technique is not only great for adding volume and length but also allows one to experiment with different colors and styles using various hair extensions available in today’s market. Happy braiding!
