How to Add Chicago Style Footnotes in Microsoft Word
Adding footnotes in your written work can give credit to the sources that you used, as well as provide additional information, context, or clarification to your readers. Chicago style footnotes are commonly used in academic writing, and with Microsoft Word, adding them has become easy and streamlined. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to add Chicago style footnotes in Microsoft Word.
Step 1: Open your Word document.
Before adding footnotes, you must open the Word document that you want to add footnotes to.
Step 2: Position your cursor where you want the footnote to appear.
Place your cursor at the end of the sentence or the word where you want to add a footnote. This is where the small superscript font will appear.
Step 3: Click on the “Insert Footnote” button.
On the “References” tab, you will find the “Insert Footnote” button. Click on this option, and Word will automatically add a superscript number to your text, and a corresponding number at the bottom of the page.
Step 4: Type your footnote.
Now that you have added the footnote, you can start typing your notes at the bottom of the page. Make sure to use the same numerical format as the one you used in your text. Your notes can include citations, additional information, or clarifications that you want to provide for your readers.
Step 5: Repeat the process for subsequent footnotes.
When you need to add another footnote, follow the same steps as above. Word will automatically number each footnote in sequence as you add them.
Step 6: Navigate between your footnotes and text.
To navigate between your footnotes and the text, you can simply click on the number at the bottom of the page to take you back to the text, or click on the number from the text to take you to the corresponding footnote.
Step 7: Format your footnotes.
Chicago style footnotes have a specific formatting requirement. Each footnote should have the author’s name, the title of the source, the publication date, the name of the publisher (if applicable), and the page number(s) of the cited source. Make sure to follow the Chicago style manual when citing your sources.
