How to Add a Separator Between Apps in Windows 11 Taskbar
The Windows taskbar is a key navigational area that provides quick access to pinned and open applications. But over time, it can get cluttered, making it hard to visually separate different categories of apps or groups of tasks. By inserting separators into the taskbar, users can organize their apps, creating a cleaner, more efficient workspace. Unfortunately, Windows 11 doesn’t offer a built-in feature to add spacers or separators directly. However, there are workarounds that savvy users employ to achieve a similar organizational effect.
Creating Invisible Icons as Separators
One popular method involves using invisible icons as a means to create apparent space between groupings of app icons on your taskbar. Here’s how you can do it:
Firstly, you’ll need to create an invisible icon:
1.Use any image editor to create a small, transparent PNG file.
2.As Windows won’t allow you to pin an image directly to the Taskbar, convert this PNG into an icon file (.ico) using an online converter.
3.Create a shortcut on your desktop: right-click the desktop, go to New > Shortcut.
4.Link this shortcut to any program on your computer—it doesn’t matter which one—as it’s only going to act as a placeholder.
5.Right-click the shortcut and go to Properties > Change Icon.
6.Browse and select your newly created invisible icon file and click OK.
Next, make the shortcut dummy proof:
1.Since the shortcut needs to remain functional for it to stay pinned to the taskbar but not actually interfere with your workflow, add an invalid command so that it does nothing when clicked.
2.In the Properties of the shortcut under Target, add “null,” so it reads something like: %windir%\system32\notepad.exe null.
Finally, add your separator:
1.Drag the shortcut with the invisible icon onto your taskbar where you desire the separator.
2.After pinning it successfully, you can delete the original shortcut from your desktop.
Using Toolbars as makeshift separators:
Another workaround is using toolbars as separators by adding new toolbars between icons:
1.Right-click on an empty space on your taskbar.
2.Select Toolbars > New toolbar.
3.Choose any folder from your PC (it’s merely for creating space), and select “Select Folder.”
4.You should now see a new toolbar section with text labels which adds space like a separator.
5.For best results and cleaner appearance remove names from these sections.
Remember that after each major update from Microsoft, you may have to replicate these steps if your custom settings revert back.
Third-Party Applications
Several third-party applications exist that allow for more intuitive customization of the taskbar including adding separators or spacers—TaskbarX and RocketDock are two examples that offer such functionalities along with extensive customization options.
As always when using third-party software especially those that affect system files or modify default settings in Windows 11 ensure they are from reputable sources and compatible with your version of Windows before downloading or installing.
While not ideal solutions for everyone by employing some creativity and leveraging shortcuts or external software you can customize your Windows 11 taskbar according to preference increase productivity by reducing clutter through effective visual separation of your application icons using separators.
