How to Add a Breaker Switch
To add a breaker switch, follow these steps:
1. Turn off the main power: Locate the main circuit breaker panel and switch off the main circuit breaker to ensure safety while working.
2. Remove the panel cover: Unscrew and carefully remove the panel cover to expose the breakers and wiring inside.
3. Select an open slot: Choose an unused slot in the panel for the new breaker switch. Ensure there’s enough space for additional wires.
4. Install a new cable: Route a new cable from the new circuit (e.g., outlet or appliance) to be protected into the breaker panel, and strip about 6 inches of sheathing from cable end.
5. Prepare the wires: Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from each individual wire (hot, neutral, and ground) within the cable.
6. Connect the wires:
– Attach the hot (typically black or red) wire to the breaker’s screw terminal.
– Attach the neutral (white) wire to the neutral bus bar.
– Attach the ground (green or bare) wire to the ground bus bar.
7. Snap in the breaker: Align and firmly push in new breaker into chosen open slot until it snaps securely into place.
8. Label the new circuit: Label the new breaker switch with relevant information or reference (e.g., room, appliance).
9. Test installation: Turn on main power, ensure all other circuits are operating normally, then switch on new breaker. Check if power is supplied to connected devices properly.
10. Replace panel cover: Screw back and secure the panel cover on your electrical panel.
Always prioritize safety when working with electricity; if unsure, consult a licensed electrician for guidance or assistance in installing a breaker switch.
