Exploring the UK’s Trendiest Beach Towns for the Ideal Staycation
When it comes to picturesque staycations in the UK, beach towns are a natural choice for their relaxed pace, seaside charm, and array of activities, both on and off the water. Having had the pleasure of living in two of the UK’s trendiest beach towns, I’ve gained first-hand insight into what each has to offer. But if I had to recommend just one for your perfect seaside getaway, it would be a tough call between these coastal gems.
The first contender is Brighton, known for its vibrant cultural scene, historic pier, and a plethora of boutique shops and eateries. Brighton is more than just a traditional beach town—it’s a hub of activity where the energy is palpable as soon as you step onto the pebble-stone beach. The famous Brighton Pier offers classic seaside fun with its amusement rides and arcade games. Meanwhile, the Lanes—an intricate maze of narrow streets—boast an eclectic mix of antique stores, quirky boutiques, and independent cafes that are perfect for lazy afternoons.
In contrast, St Ives in Cornwall provides a more laid-back vibe with its golden sands and crystal-clear waters that could rival those of far more exotic locations. Renowned for its art scene, thanks to the luminous quality of light that has attracted artists for generations, St Ives has no shortage of galleries including the outpost of the Tate Gallery. Additionally, its culinary scene has been steadily rising in stature with seafood restaurants serving locally sourced catch-of-the-day against panoramic backdrops. Both Porthmeor and Porthminster beaches are heavenly spots to relax or indulge in activities like surfing or paddleboarding.
So which one takes the title for the best UK beach town for a staycation? It ultimately depends on what you’re looking for.
If your ideal staycation involves a lively atmosphere with plenty of things to see and do beyond sunbathing on the beach, Brighton might be your go-to destination. It combines seaside fun with cultural experiences and is easily accessible from London.
However, if serenity coupled with natural beauty sounds like your slice of paradise — not to mention top-notch seafood and mesmerizing art — then St Ives will win your heart.
Both towns encapsulate unique characteristics that make them appealing in their own right. While my personal preference leans towards St Ives for its enchanting allure and tranquil environment, I recommend visiting both to truly capture the essence of what makes Britain’s coastline so beloved.
