Every Bethesda RPG prologue, ranked from worst to best
Every Bethesda RPG has a unique way of drawing players into their vast worlds, and the prologue is where it all begins. Here, we’ll rank each prologue from the wide array of Bethesda RPGs, considering how effective they are in setting up the storyline, introducing the game mechanics, and hooking the player.
1.Fallout 76 (2018)
Starting our list is the prologue of Fallout 76. Unfortunately, it serves as more of an instructional level than an enticing beginning to an epic saga. The story starts on Reclamation Day, but the lack of human NPCs and limited interaction make it a tad too sterile to truly resonate with players.
2.The Elder Scrolls Arena (1994)
As Bethesda’s first RPG foray, Arena’s prologue is understandably rudimentary. Players escape from a dungeon after being captured by the main antagonist. While groundbreaking at the time for its open world and gameplay elements, by today’s standards it’s not particularly engaging.
3.The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall (1996)
Daggerfall’s introduction gives a bit more context to your imprisonment and tasks you with escaping a dungeon infested with creatures. More intricate than its predecessor, but still feels somewhat outdated compared to later titles.
4.Fallout 3 (2008)
Fallout 3’s prologue is memorable for sure. The birth-to-childhood approach is unique as you literally grow up in an underground vault. Although some criticize it for being drawn out, it provides significant backstory and emotional engagement with the player’s character.
5.The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (2002)
Morrowind kicks off with your release from prison and arrival into the mysterious land of Vvardenfell. While not very action-packed, it’s layered with intrigue and offers a feeling of true freedom once you step off that boat in Seyda Neen.
6.Fallout 4 (2015)
With Fallout 4, Bethesda refined their storytelling approach during the opening sequence by combining intense moments with familial elements that drive the narrative forward throughout the game. The hurried rush into Vault 111 as bombs drop conveys both urgency and disbelief effectively.
7.The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)
Atop our list is Skyrim’s prologue – an unforgettable mix of drama and suspense that throws players straight into its rich lore and conflict-ridden land! Starting off as a prisoner about to be executed during a civil war before being unexpectedly saved by a dragon attack sets an incredible stage for adventure.
Each Bethesda RPG has its own method of introducing players to its world; some might falter slightly while others instantly hook you with their compelling beginnings. These prologues remain a testament to Bethesda’s ability to evolve storytelling within the realm of role-playing games over the years.
