Easy Ways to Cut Videos on iMovie
Video editing can seem like a tedious and challenging task, but with iMovie, Apple’s user-friendly digital video editing software, even beginners can create professional-looking movies with ease. One of the essential skills for video editing is cutting or trimming parts of a video. If you are new to iMovie, follow this beginner’s guide with easy ways to cut videos.
1. Import your video clip
Before you can start cutting your video, you need to import your clip into iMovie. To do this, simply open iMovie and select “Create New” -> “Movie.” Then, click the “Import Media” button, browse for your video file(s), and click the “Import Selected” button.
2. Add your clip to the timeline
Once you’ve imported your media, it’s time to add it to the movie timeline. Drag and drop the video clip from the “Library” section and place it in the project timeline at the bottom of the iMovie window.
3. Cutting or Splitting a clip
To cut a clip in iMovie, use one of these three methods:
a. The Blade tool:
Select the ‘Split Clip’ tool (shaped like a pair of scissors) from the toolbar above your timeline. Move the playhead to where you want to make a cut, then click on it. Your clip will now be split into two separate clips.
b. Manually:
If you already have a rough idea of where you want to trim a clip and don’t need precise cuts, click on the desired part in the timeline and drag either edge until you have the desired length.
c. Use Keyboard shortcuts:
The most efficient way of cutting clips is by using keyboard shortcuts: Press Command+B (Mac) or Ctrl+B (Windows) when the playhead is at your desired cutting point.
4. Delete unwanted parts
Now that you have separated the parts of your video, you can remove any unwanted parts by selecting them and pressing the “delete” key on your keyboard or right-clicking and choosing “Delete”.
5. Rearrange or close gaps
After deleting any unwanted footage, drag and drop the remaining video clips to rearrange them, or simply let iMovie take care of closing gaps between clips automatically.
6. Finishing touches and exporting
You might want to add some finishing touches like transitions, titles, and effects. Once you’re satisfied with your edited video, click “File” in the top menu, then select “Share” -> “File” to export your project.
iMovie is a versatile option for inexperienced users and professionals alike, providing an easy-to-navigate interface and powerful editing tools. Don’t be afraid to experiment with iMovie’s numerous features. The more you practice, the better you’ll become at cutting and editing videos with ease. Now go ahead and unleash your creativity!
