Breeding superworms can be a rewarding and cost-effective way of providing a steady food source for your reptiles, birds, and fish. With the right care, breeding these nutritious insects is relatively simple. Here’s a straightforward guide to breeding superworms in just 13 steps.
1. Purchase adult superworms: Start by buying healthy adult superworms (Zophobas morio) from a reputable supplier, preferably between 120-150 worms.
2. Prepare a container: Get a well-ventilated plastic or glass container measuring at least 18 quarts. Drill holes on the sides and the lid for air circulation, but ensure they are not large enough for superworms to escape.
3. Add substrate: Fill the bottom of the container with a 2-inch layer of substrate made from wheat bran or oat bran.
4. Provide food: Place small pieces of vegetables, such as carrots, potatoes, or broccoli into the container for hydration and nourishment.
5. Create a hideout: Arrange egg carton sections or toilet paper rolls inside the container to serve as hiding spots for your superworms.
6. Introduce the worms: Gently place the adult superworms in the prepared container and give them space to move around and burrow.
7. Maintain humidity: Every few days, spray a light mist of water over their hideouts to maintain ideal humidity levels in their environment (around 60% relatively humidity).
8. Proper lighting: Place the container under indirect sunlight or near a natural light source without extreme heat exposure.
9. Separate pupae: As soon as you notice any pupae forming, use tweezers to remove them from the main colony and place them in a separate container with sections of egg cartons for shelter.
10. Care for pupae: Keep an eye on any pupae to ensure they have not been disturbed and provide a small piece of vegetable for nourishment.
11. Introduce adults back to main colony: Once the pupae transform into beetles, move them back to the main container for breeding purposes.
12. Optimal beetle habitat: Maintain the ideal humidity, temperature, and lighting conditions for the beetles as they breed and lay eggs in the substrate.
13. Harvest new superworms: After about two weeks, dig gently through the substrate to find newly born superworms. Once they are large enough, you can add them to your feeding stock or separate them into another container to continue breeding.
With patience and care, you will soon see an increase in your superworm population, providing ample food for your pets with minimal effort.
