Can You Use an iPad mini as Your Phone?
With the rise in popularity of larger screen smartphones, it isn’t uncommon for people to wonder if they can use their iPad mini as their phone. While it is possible, there are a few factors to consider before making the switch.
First and foremost, the iPad mini does not have cellular capabilities on its own. It only has Wi-Fi connectivity, meaning it cannot make phone calls or send texts without some form of external device or app. This brings us to solution number one: a VoIP (voice over internet protocol) app. There are several popular options such as Skype, WhatsApp, and FaceTime that allow for both voice and video calls in addition to texting. However, this solution will require a stable Wi-Fi connection since relying on data alone could result in spotty call quality.
The second solution is to utilize a physical device that pairs with the iPad mini to allow for cellular calls and texting. Apple’s own solution, the Apple Watch, can be connected to the iPad mini and can make calls and send texts through its cellular connection. Other third-party solutions such as the FreedomPop Supernova or a mobile hotspot device can also be used, but again require a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection to work.
While the iPad mini has a larger screen than most smartphones, it can be less convenient for holding and using on the go. It also lacks the ability to fit nicely in a pocket or small purse, making it less portable. On the other hand, the larger screen offers more comfort and visual space for tasks such as emailing, video chats, or document editing.
