The City of Asheville has launched a groundbreaking Urban Forest Master Plan, becoming one of the first cities in the Southeast to implement such a comprehensive approach to managing its tree canopy. The plan aims to increase the city’s tree coverage from 37% to 50% by 2040, addressing climate change, improving air quality, and enhancing urban livability.

The initiative includes a detailed inventory of existing trees, a planting strategy targeting underserved neighborhoods, and the implementation of advanced monitoring technologies. The city has partnered with local environmental groups and tech companies to develop AI-powered tools for tree health assessment and maintenance scheduling.
