A Guide to Moving Your Mac Photos Library to an External Drive
As a Mac user, your Photos library is likely one of your most prized possessions. It contains thousands of memories that are precious to you, and you’d hate to lose them. However, over time, your Photos library can take up a lot of space on your Mac’s internal hard drive, causing your computer to slow down. Fortunately, there’s a solution to this problem: moving your Photos library to an external drive.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps of moving your Photos library to an external drive, so you can free up space on your Mac’s hard drive and keep your memories safe.
Step 1: Choose an External Drive
Before you begin moving your Photos library, you’ll need to choose an external drive that can hold all your photos and videos. Ideally, it should have at least twice the amount of space as your current Photos library. You’ll also want to make sure that the external drive has a high transfer rate, so your images can transfer quickly.
Step 2: Copy Your Photos Library to the External Drive
To move your Photos library to the external drive, you’ll need to transfer all your photos and videos to the external drive. Here’s how:
1. Connect your external drive to your Mac.
2. Open Finder and locate your current Photos library (it’s usually in your Pictures folder).
3. Right-click on your Photos library and select “Copy.”
4. Navigate to your external drive in Finder and right-click in the folder where you want to store your Photos library.
5. Select “Paste” to copy your Photos library to the external drive.
Depending on the size of your Photos library, this process may take some time. Once the process is complete, make sure to verify that all your photos and videos have been transferred to the external drive.
Step 3: Open Photos with Your External Library
Now that your Photos library is on your external drive, you’ll need to open it with the Photos app on your Mac. Here’s how:
1. Hold down the Option key on your keyboard and launch the Photos app.
2. Select “Choose Library” in the window that appears.
3. Navigate to your external drive and select your Photos library.
4. Click “Choose” to open your Photos library in the Photos app.
Once you’ve completed this step, you’ll be able to use the Photos app as usual, but with your Photos library on your external drive.
Step 4: Delete Your Original Photos Library
After you’ve successfully moved your Photos library to your external drive and verified that everything is working properly, you can delete your original Photos library from your Mac’s hard drive. Here’s how:
1. Open Finder and navigate to your original Photos library (it should be in your Pictures folder).
2. Right-click on your original Photos library and select “Move to Trash.”
3. Right-click on the Trash folder and select “Empty Trash.”
With these steps, you’ve successfully moved your Photos library to your external drive, freeing up space on your Mac’s hard drive and keeping your precious memories safe. Remember to always back up your external drive to ensure that your memories are always secure.
