How to Make a Baby Bib: 12 Steps
Creating a baby bib can be an enjoyable and practical project for expecting parents or as a thoughtful handmade gift for someone special. Follow these 12 steps to learn how to make your own baby bib quickly and easily.
.Gather materials: You will need fabric (cotton or flannel work best), bias tape, a bib template or pattern, sewing machine, pins, scissors, and thread.
.Choose your fabric: Select soft, absorbent material in colors and patterns that either match the baby’s nursery or reflect the preferences of the gifter.
.Print or create a bib template: Search online for printable bib templates or create your own by tracing an existing bib onto paper. Cut out the template.
.Place your fabric on a flat surface: Ensure that the fabric is wrinkle-free and lying flat.
.Trace the template onto the fabric: Use a fabric marker or chalk to trace around the template onto your chosen fabric.
.Cut out the bib pieces: Use sharp fabric scissors to carefully cut along the traced lines, giving you two identical pieces for each bib.
.Pin the two pieces together: Align each corner of your two bib pieces with right sides facing one another. Secure with pins all around the edges, leaving about 1/4 inch between them and the edge of the fabric.
.Sew around the perimeter of the bib: Using your sewing machine, sew along the pinned edges with a straight, even stitch about 1/4 inch from both edges. Be sure to leave an opening of about 3 inches on one side for turning inside out later.
.Trim excess fabric: Carefully trim excess material around your stitches while avoiding cutting too close to them.
.Turn right-side out and press seams: Turn your sewn bib right side out through the opening you left earlier, taking care when dealing with corners. Use an iron or your fingers to press the seams flat all around the bib.
.Attach bias tape to neckline: Measure and cut a piece of bias tape that comfortably fits around the neck opening of your bib, allowing for overlap on both ends. Open up one end of the bias tape and sandwich the top edge of the bib inside. Pin in place, then sew a straight stitch along each edge of the bias tape, connecting it to both sides of the bib.
.Add closures: Sew on your choice of snaps, hooks and loops, or ties for securing the baby bib onto the baby’s neck.
Voilà! Your handmade baby bib is now ready for use or gifting. This easy-to-make and customizable creation ensures comfort and functionality for both baby and parent while providing a personal touch to mealtime essentials.
