How to Make a Cushion Cover: 15 Steps
Making your own cushion covers is a fantastic way to add a personal touch to your home décor. Follow these 15 easy steps to create the perfect cushion cover for your living space.
.Gather materials: You’ll need fabric, thread, scissors, pins, a sewing machine, measuring tape and a zipper or buttons if you want a removable cover.
.Measure your cushion: Measure the dimensions of your cushion, adding an extra inch for seam allowance on each side.
.Choose your fabric: When selecting fabric for your cushion covers, consider the colors, patterns and textures that complement your existing décor.
.Cut out the fabric: Using your measurements as a guideline, cut two pieces of fabric that are the same size.
.Hem the edges (optional): For a neater finish, fold and press half an inch of fabric along all four edges and sew a straight stitch across.
.Sew or pin the zipper/button placket (optional): If you’re adding a zipper or buttons for easy removal, place the two fabric pieces together with their right sides facing each other and pin or sew along one side where you would like to install the zipper or buttons.
.Install the zipper/button placket (optional): Attach the zipper or sew buttonholes and buttons in place along the pinned/sewn side.
.Align and pin the fabric: Lay out both pieces of fabric with right sides facing each other and line up their edges. Pin them together along three sides, making sure to leave one side open if not using a zipper/buttons.
.Sew the edges: Use a sewing machine to stitch around the pinned edges with a half-inch seam allowance. If you hemmed your edges in step 2, make sure not to sew over this finished edge.
.Trim seams and corners: Trim excess fabric from seams to reduce bulk in corners, and clip off the corners diagonally.
.Turn the cover right-side out: Carefully turn the cushion cover right-side out through the open zipper/button placket or remaining open side.
.Press seams: Use an iron to press seams flat, so edges lie smoothly against one another and look professional.
.Add a hook and loop tape (optional): If your design doesn’t have a zipper or buttons, attach self-adhesive hook and loop tape to the unsewn edge for easy opening and closing.
.Insert the cushion: Gently push your cushion into the cover, making sure each corner is tucked in snugly.
.Close your cushion cover: Zip, button or press together the opposite edges of the hook and loop tape to finish your cushion cover.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully created a beautiful cushion cover to enhance your home’s interior. With these simple steps, you can experiment with various fabric types and patterns to create a collection of unique cushion covers that showcase your personal style.
