How to Open a Door With a Knife: 6 Steps
Opening a door with a knife can be a useful skill when you’re locked out or in an emergency situation. It’s important to exercise caution and ensure that you’re not breaking any laws while attempting this process. Here are six steps on how to open a door with a knife:
1. Choose the right knife
Select a sturdy, flat-headed knife, such as a butter knife or a pocket knife with a flat edge. Avoid using sharp or pointed knives, as they can damage the lock and may cause injury.
2. Identify the type of lock
Examine the door lock to determine its type. Typically, interior doors use spring latch locks, which are simple and easier to open with a knife. Deadbolts, on the other hand, require specialized tools and techniques.
3. Insert the knife into the gap between the door and the frame
Slide the flat edge of your chosen knife into the thin gap between the door and its frame. Do this near the latch, as it’s where you’ll be applying pressure to disengage it from its housing.
4. Apply leverage against the latch
Tilt your knife at an angle so that it’s pointing towards the locking mechanism – this will give you better leverage when trying to pry open the latch. Apply gentle but steady pressure on the knife handle in an attempt to slide the latch back into the door, unlocking it.
5. Remain patient
Picking locks takes patience and practice. If you don’t succeed immediately, stay calm and maintain consistent pressure on your knife – adjusting angles or insertion points if needed.
6. Open the door
Once you’ve successfully moved the latch out of its housing, turn your door handle (if applicable) or gently push or pull the door open to gain entry.
Keep in mind that while opening doors with knives is helpful in some situations, it should only be done within your legal rights and as a last resort. It’s always better to seek professional help if you’re locked out or unable to open a door.
