How to Open a JAR File on Windows and Mac
A JAR (Java Archive) file is a package file format used to distribute application software or libraries on the Java platform. If you’ve ever downloaded a Java program, there’s a good chance it came in the form of a JAR file. Here’s how you can open one on Windows and Mac.
Opening a JAR File on Windows
You need to have Java installed on your computer to open JAR files. If you haven’t installed Java, head to the official Oracle website, download the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it.
1. Open the folder that contains the JAR file.
2. Right-click on the JAR file and select ‘Open with’ from the contextual menu.
3. If Java is installed, you should see ‘Java(TM) Platform SE binary’. Click it to run the JAR file.
If ‘Java(TM) Platform SE binary’ doesn’t appear in the list:
1. Select ‘Choose another app’.
2. Click ‘More apps’, scroll down, and click ‘Look for another app on this PC’.
3. Navigate to where Java is installed (usually C:\Program Files\Java\jre[version]\bin).
4. Select ‘javaw.exe’ and click Open. This should associate JAR files with Java going forward.
Running JAR Files via Command Line in Windows:
1. Press Win + R, type cmd, and press Enter to open Command Prompt.
2. Type the following command: java -jar “C:\path\to\your\file.jar” Replace “C:\path\to\your\file.jar” with your specific file path.
3. Press Enter to run the application.
Opening a JAR File on Mac
Mac also requires Java to open JAR files. If not installed, download Java from Oracle’s website and install it.
1. Open Finder and navigate to your JAR file.
2. Control-click or right-click the jar file.
3. Click ‘Open With’ > ‘Other…’.
4. Navigate to ‘/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java’.
5. Select it, check ‘Always Open With,’ and then click ‘Open’ to run the jar file.
Running JAR Files via Terminal in Mac:
1. Launch Terminal from Applications > Utilities.
2. Enter this command: java -jar /path/to/your/file.jar Replace “/path/to/your/file.jar” with your specific file path.
3. Hit Enter to execute the application.
It’s worth noting that not all jar files are executables – some are libraries meant for use with other java applications and won’t do anything if double-clicked or run in command-line interfaces without proper parameters or accompanying software.
By following these steps on your respective operating system, you should be able to open and access most JAR files without trouble!
