With the advent of smartphones, voicemail has transformed from a simple message recording system into an integral part of our communication suite. The iPhone, known for its user-friendly interface, offers various voicemail features including carrier voicemail and live voicemail. Here’s how you can make use of these services to ensure you never miss important messages.
Setting Up Carrier Voicemail:
1. Open the ‘Phone’ app on your iPhone.
2. Tap ‘Voicemail’ located in the bottom right corner.
3. If you’ve never set up voicemail before, you’ll see a button that says ‘Set Up Now.’ Tap on this to begin.
4. Create a voicemail password when prompted and then enter it again to confirm.
5. Follow the prompts to choose and record your custom greeting or opt for the default one provided by your carrier.
6. Once you save your greeting, your voicemail is ready to receive messages.
To listen to messages:
1. Tap on the ‘Voicemail’ tab in the Phone app.
2. A list of voicemails will appear.
3. Select any message and tap on it to play.
Using Visual Voicemail:
Visual voicemail allows you to see a list of messages and choose which ones to listen to or delete without having to listen to instructions or voice prompts.
1. Go to the ‘Voicemail’ tab.
2. Browse through the list of messages.
3. Tap on one to expand it and hit the ‘Play’ button.
4. You can also delete messages or call back directly from this screen.
Visual voicemail might require data usage so check with your carrier for any fees.
Setting Up Live Voicemail (also known as Voice Messages):
Live Voicemail is usually integrated within iMessage.
1. Open an iMessage conversation thread.
2. Press and hold down the voice message button (represented by a microphone) next to the iMessage box.
3. Record your message.
4. Once done, swipe up to send instantly or swipe left if you want to cancel.
Recipients can listen and respond quickly, making it an interactive way of communicating beyond text.
Accessing Voicemail from Another Phone or When Abroad:
If you need access to your iPhone’s carrier voicemail from another handset:
1. Dial your own mobile number from any other phone.
2. When your greeting plays, interrupt it by pressing the star () key or sometimes pound (#) key depending on carriers.
3. Enter your voicemail password when prompted.
Remember that when checking voicemails from another phone or while roaming, standard call charges may apply.
By setting up these features on your iPhone, rest assured that whether you’re unable or prefer not to pick up a call directly, there is a convenient way for others to leave you a voice message and for you to listen at a later time and respond accordingly.
