Follow this step-by-step guide to create your own stylish and professional-looking blazer.
Materials:
– Blazer pattern
– Fabric (e.g., wool, tweed, or linen)
– Lining material
– Interfacing
– Matching thread
– Sewing machine
– Scissors
– Measuring tape
– Pins
– Iron
– Hand-sewing needle
1. Select and Prepare Your Pattern
First, select a blazer pattern that you like, making sure it’s suitable for your skill level. You can find patterns online or in sewing stores. Once you have your pattern, read through the instructions to familiarize yourself with the process and ensure you have enough fabric and materials.
2. Cut Out Pattern Pieces
Trace the pattern onto your fabric using tailor’s chalk or a fabric pen. Make sure to transfer all markings, such as notches and darts. Carefully cut out the pattern pieces following the outline.
3. Apply Interface
Apply interfacing on parts of the garment that need support and structure, such as the collar, lapels, and facings. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to properly fuse the interfacing onto the fabric.
4. Construct the Blazer’s Body
Start by sewing darts on the front pieces of your blazer according to the pattern instructions. This will add shape to the waist area.
Next, sew the front pieces to the back piece at shoulders and side seams using a straight stitch with a ⅝-inch seam allowance. Press open seams with an iron.
5. Assemble Sleeves
Sew the sleeves together along the seam lines. Set the sleeves aside, as you’ll attach them to the blazer after constructing the collar and lapel.
6. Create Collar and Lapel
Sew the undercollar and top collar pieces together along the outer edges, leaving one edge open for turning. Turn right-side out and press.
