How to Sew on a Wig
Wigs have been used for centuries as fashion statements, costume accessories, and as practical solutions for individuals with hair-related issues. Sewing on a wig ensures a secure and natural-looking fit. In this guide, we will discuss the steps to properly sew on a wig.
Materials You’ll Need:
1. Wig with clips or combs
2. Weaving cap, mesh cap, or nylon stocking cap
3. Sewing needle
4. Weaving thread (preferably in the same color as the wig)
5. Scissors
6. T-pins
7. Tape measure
8. Styrofoam head or wig stand (optional)
Step 1: Prepare Your Hair and Head
First, make sure your hair is clean and well-moisturized. Braid your hair into cornrows or pin it flat against your head to create a smooth surface for the wig application.
Step 2: Wear the Cap
Select a cap that fits snugly over your head and covers the entire hairline, ensuring it stays in place while sewing on the wig. You can choose between a weaving cap, mesh cap, or nylon stocking cap based on breathability and comfort.
Step 3: Measure and Place the Wig
Position the wig on your head over the cap to assess fit and comfort. Make adjustments to achieve an even distribution of hair around your head without any bulges or gaps. Pin the wig’s clips or combs onto the cap using T-pins.
Step 4: Thread Your Needle
Cut a piece of weaving thread approximately twice the length of your index finger to elbow and thread it through your needle, doubling the thread in half by tying both ends together with a knot.
Step 5: Start Sewing
Begin at one side of the wig near the first clip or comb. Pierce through the edge of the wig cap, just beneath the clip or comb, making sure to capture both layers of material: the cap and the wig. Then, insert the needle through the loop in the thread you just created and gently pull to tighten the knot. This is called a blanket stitch.
Step 6: Continue Sewing
Maintain consistent spacing (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch) and tension throughout your stitching. The blanket stitch should securely attach the wig to the cap without pulling or puckering. Keep sewing around the perimeter of the wig until you reach your starting point again.
Step 7: Secure Your Stitches
When you return to where you started in Step 5, sew through several nearby stitches to ensure extra security of attachment. After ensuring that all clips or combs are secured by your stitches, cut any excess thread with scissors.
Step 8 (Optional): Add Extra Security
If necessary, sew additional stitches along strategic points, such as the hairline or areas with particularly heavy hair concentration.
Step 9: Remove T-pins and Adjust
Once all sewing is complete, remove any T-pins used to secure your wig throughout this process. Try on your newly attached wig, adjusting for comfort and refining its overall look.
By following these steps carefully, you will have successfully mastered the art of sewing on a wig, opening up endless possibilities for personalized style and self-expression.
