Congkak, also known as Dakon, is a traditional board game that originated in Southeast Asia. It is primarily played in countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The game is played on a wooden board called “congkak,” which has two rows of seven small holes and two larger holes at each end. Each player has their own set of seeds or marbles, which are used during the game. Here are three ways to play Congkak, suitable for both beginners and experienced players.
1. Basic Congkak
The basic Congkak game involves two players sitting opposite each other with the board between them. The goal is to capture as many seeds as possible by sowing and taking turns to move the seeds from hole to hole around the board counterclockwise.
Each player starts with an equal number of seeds, typically seven, placed in each of their respective small holes on the board. Players take turns picking up all the seeds from one of their small holes and distributing them one by one counterclockwise into subsequent holes, including opponent’s holes but not the large holes. The last seed must land on an empty hole or a hole containing only opponent’s seeds.
Upon ending this action, players can capture all opposing seeds in that hole where the last seed landed. Captured seeds are placed into a player’s large hole known as their “storehouse.” The game ends when one player cannot make a legal move. The player with the most seeds in their storehouse wins.
2. Timed Congkak
Timed Congkak adds an extra element of challenge to the basic game by imposing a time limit for each player’s turn. This intensifies gameplay by encouraging quick thinking and faster movements.
To play Timed Congkak, set a timer—usually 30 seconds—for each player’s turn. If a player fails to complete their turn within the allotted time, they must forfeit their turn, and the other player takes their turn. The game proceeds as in Basic Congkak, with the player owning the most seeds in their storehouse at the end declared the winner.
3. Three-player Congkak
The three-player Congkak variant involves an additional row of holes and is suitable for more experienced players. Each player has their row of holes and storehouse, with gameplay mechanics similar to Basic Congkak and Timed Congkak.
In this version, seeds move counterclockwise around the board. Players should only attempt to capture seeds in opponents’ holes directly opposite or adjacent to their row. The game ends when one player is unable to make a legal move, and the winner is determined by whoever possesses the most seeds.
These three ways to play Congkak offer different levels of challenges for everyone. They also highlight the versatility of this traditional board game that has stood the test of time throughout Southeast Asia. Give it a try and experience its rich history for yourself!
