Darts are an essential part of sewing, used to add shape and contour to garments. They are folds in the fabric that taper down to a point, creating a more tailored fit for the wearer. Sewing darts can be intimidating for beginners, but with a little practice, you’ll master this essential sewing technique in no time. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to sew darts.
1. Mark the dart on your fabric: Start by transferring the dart markings from your pattern piece onto your fabric. You can use tailor’s chalk or a fabric pen to draw the dart’s legs (the two lines that converge at the point) and the dart’s fold line (the line running through the middle of the dart).
2. Fold the fabric: Align the two legs of the dart markings so that they lay directly on top of each other, with right sides together. The fold line should now be on top.
3. Pin in place: Securely pin the folded fabric along the dart’s legs to hold them in place while you sew.
4. Thread your sewing machine: Choose a thread color that matches or closely coordinates with your fabric and thread your sewing machine.
5. Begin sewing: Starting at the widest part of the dart, stitch along one leg using a straight stitch setting on your sewing machine. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning for added strength.
6. Taper down to a point: As you sew towards the pointed end of the dart, slowly narrow your stitch line until you reach the tip. Instead of backstitching, leave long thread tails at this end.
7. Tie off and trim excess thread: To secure your seam, take the long tails left over from Step 6 and tie them in a secure knot close to the point of protection. Then trim any excess thread.
8. Press and finish: Finally, press the dart seam open or towards the center of the garment, depending on your pattern’s instructions. This will give a more professional finish to your sewn dart.
That’s it! With these eight simple steps, you’ll be sewing darts like a pro in no time. Just remember that practice makes perfect, and soon you’ll be creating beautifully tailored garments with ease.
