How to Make a Drawstring Purse: 10 Steps
A drawstring purse is a versatile accessory that can be used for various occasions and can be customized to match your unique style. Making your own drawstring purse is more straightforward than you might think. In this article, we’ll go through the 10 easy steps to create your very own drawstring purse.
1. Gather materials
For this project, you will need:
– Fabric (approx. half a yard) for the main purse and lining
– Drawstring (cord or ribbon)
– Scissors
– Pins
– Sewing machine or needle and thread
– Ruler
– Iron
2. Choose your fabric and drawstring
Pick fabrics for the exterior and lining of your purse, keeping in mind that you want something sturdy yet stylish. Choose a drawstring material that will complement the fabric design.
3. Measure and cut fabric
Measure and cut out two pieces from both the main fabric and lining fabric with dimensions of approx. 14″x15″.
4. Sew the main fabric pieces together
Place the exterior fabric pieces with their right sides together. Pin along the sides and bottom edge, leaving around a 2-inch gap at the top for the drawstring casing. Sew along the pinned sides with a half-inch seam allowance.
5. Sew the lining fabric pieces together
Repeat step 4 with the lining fabric pieces, but for this time leave an opening at the bottom for turning the purse inside out later.
6. Press seams open and create drawstring casing
Press seams open on both main fabric and lining using an iron. Measure 1-inch down from the top edge, fold it over, press, then fold another inch down to create casing for drawstrings on both exterior and lining fabrics. Edge stitch along both casings.
7. Place lining inside main fabric
Turn main fabric right side out, while keeping lining fabric inside out. Place the lining inside the main fabric portion, aligning seams, and pin in place at the top edge where the casings meet.
8. Sew drawstring channels
Sew through both layers of fabric just below the casing stitch line to create two drawstring channels, making sure to leave both ends open.
9. Attach drawstring
Take your chosen drawstring material and use a safety pin to thread it through both channels. For ease of use, make sure that one end stays accessible from both exit points.
10. Finish purse
Pull the drawstring to close the purse and trim any excess cord or ribbon if needed. Turn the lining right side out through the previously left bottom opening, then sew it shut and tuck it back into the purse.
Congratulations! You have successfully created your own drawstring purse in just 10 simple steps. The best part about this project is that you can customize and make various sizes for different occasions or as unique gifts for friends and family. Enjoy your new handmade accessory!
