Filling a tall planter can seem challenging, especially if you’re new to gardening. However, with a few simple tips and techniques, you can create a stunning display in no time. Follow these steps to fill your tall planter with plants that will thrive and look amazing.
1. Choose the right plants:
Selecting the right plants is crucial for success in a tall planter. Look for plants that have similar light, water, and soil requirements. Consider a mix of tall, medium, and low-growing plants to create visual interest at different heights. You might also choose plants with various textures and colors to create a striking arrangement.
2. Gather your materials:
Before you begin, gather all necessary materials such as potting soil, compost or other organic matter, gloves, trowel, slow-release fertilizer, and your selected plants.
3. Prepare the base layer:
Tall planters can be expensive to fill entirely with soil – plus, doing so may hinder drainage. To save money and promote better drainage, create a layer of lightweight filler materials at the bottom of your planter first. You can use packing peanuts, plastic bottles turned upside down with the lids on, or even larger stones or broken terracotta pots.
Fill one-third of your planter with filler material and cover it with landscape fabric so that the soil doesn’t mix with it.
4. Fill with soil:
Now add high-quality potting soil mixed with compost or other organic matter (usually in a ratio of 1:1) on top of the landscape fabric. Fill the pot until it reaches about two-thirds of its height. Make sure there’s enough room left for the root balls of your chosen plants.
5. Add slow-release fertilizer:
Mix slow-release fertilizer into the top layer of soil according to package instructions before planting. This step ensures that your plants receive a consistent supply of nutrients throughout the growing season.
6. Arrange your plants:
Next, remove the plants from their nursery containers and gently tease out their roots. Place them in the tall planter, starting with the tallest ones first. Ensure that the root ball of each plant is at the same level as the surface of the soil. Position medium-height and low-growing plants around them, keeping their mature size in mind so they don’t get overcrowded.
7. Finish planting:
Once you’ve arranged all your plants, backfill with potting soil around them, ensuring that there are no air pockets. Gently tamp down the soil and water thoroughly to help it settle.
8. Add a finishing touch:
For a polished look, add a layer of mulch or decorative pebbles on top of the soil to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
With these steps in mind, you’re now prepared to fill your tall planter for an impressive display that’s sure to turn heads. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different plant combinations to create an arrangement that is uniquely yours. Happy gardening!
