Aloo Paratha is a delicious Indian flatbread that’s stuffed with spiced mashed potatoes and cooked to perfection. A favorite across India and beyond, this versatile dish can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Follow these 12 straightforward steps to make your own mouthwatering Aloo Paratha right at home!
1. Gather your ingredients: You’ll need whole wheat flour, peeled and boiled potatoes, chopped coriander leaves, finely chopped onions, grated ginger, green chilies, oil or ghee for cooking, salt, chaat masala (optional), red chili powder, garam masala, and cumin seeds.
2. Prepare the dough: Combine the whole wheat flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. Gradually add water while mixing until you achieve a soft dough consistency. Knead the dough for about five minutes, then let it rest under a damp cloth for 20-30 minutes.
3. Prepare the potato filling: Mash the boiled potatoes thoroughly in a large mixing bowl. Add the chopped coriander leaves, onions, grated ginger, green chilies (according to taste), a pinch of salt, chaat masala (optional), red chili powder (for added spiciness), garam masala, and slightly crushed cumin seeds. Mix well so that all the spices are properly incorporated.
4. Divide the dough: After letting it rest, divide the dough into even-sized balls (about equal to golf balls).
5. Flatten a dough ball: Take one ball of dough and flatten it with your fingers or a rolling pin into about four-inch diameter circles.
6. Stuff with potato filling: Place a heaping spoonful of potato filling in the center of each flattened circle of dough.
7. Seal the edges: Gently gather the edges of the flattened circle towards its center to completely enclose the potato filling. Pinch and twist the top to seal it tightly.
8. Flatten stuffed dough: Press the filled dough ball gently, then roll it out slowly and evenly on a well-floured surface to a thickness of about 1/4 inch.
9. Heat a pan: Place a non-stick or iron pan (tawa) on medium heat.
10. Cook the Aloo Paratha: Place the rolled-out paratha onto the heated pan. Let one side cook for about a minute, then flip it using a spatula. Apply some oil or ghee on this side while the other side cooks. Flip once more and apply oil/ghee on the other side. Cook until both sides are golden brown and crispy.
11. Serve hot: For an authentic touch, serve the Aloo Paritha hot with yogurt, pickle, or even butter.
12. Enjoy your homemade Aloo Paratha! As you continue making this delectable Indian treat, feel free to adjust spices and fillings to your liking. Enjoy this versatile dish anytime for a taste of Indian cuisine right within your kitchen!
