How to Build a Halfpipe or Ramp

1. Planning and Designing
First and foremost, you need to decide on the size and dimensions of your halfpipe or ramp. Consider the available space, your skill level, and the types of tricks you want to perform. Typical ramp dimensions include mini ramps (2-3 feet high) and halfpipes reaching 4-6 feet high. You can customize these dimensions based on your preferences.
2. Materials and Tools
To build a sturdy halfpipe or ramp, gather the necessary materials:
– Plywood sheets – minimum thickness: ¾ inches
– Wooden beams (2x4s)
– Masonite or Skatelite (a protective surface for riding)
– Galvanized metal – for coping (the top edge of the ramp)
– Screws, nails, bolts
– Drill, saw, hammer
– Tape measure, pencil, level

3. Building the Frame
Begin by constructing the two side frames that determine your ramp’s shape.

a) Measure and cut – Cut your preferred surface in accordance with your ramp size.
b) Attach to sublayers – Attach each section using screws at least every 6-8 inches. Be cautious and ensure not to leave any protruding screw heads or surface irregularities.
6. Coping Installation
Coping will provide a smooth edge for grinding tricks and add durability to your ramp.
a) Measure and cut – Cut galvanized metal pipes according to the width of your halfpipe.
b) Attach coping – Cut notches in the side frames at equal distances apart so that the coping can sit flush overthem. Secure it with screws or bolts after aligning it correctly along the width of your ramp.
