Rook is an exciting strategy card game that can be enjoyed by players of all ages. The game was created in the early 1900s and has developed a dedicated following over the years. Here are 15 steps to help you learn how to play Rook.
1. Obtain a deck of Rook cards: Rook is played with a special deck, consisting of 57 numbered cards in four colored suits (red, green, black, and yellow) and a unique Rook bird card. You can purchase a Rook deck online or at your nearest game store.
2. Have 4 players ready: Rook is best played with four participants, though it’s possible to alter the rules for different numbers of players. Organize your group into two teams of two.
3. Remove unused cards: For the standard variation called “Kentucky Discard,” remove the cards numbered 1 through 4 in each of the suits from the deck, leaving a total of 41 cards.
4. Rank your cards: The remaining cards are ranked as follows – from highest to lowest – 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, and Rook bird card.
5. Shuffle and deal: Shuffle the deck and deal nine cards to each player. Place the remaining five cards face down in the middle of the table as the kitty or nest.
6. Begin bidding: Starting from the dealer’s left and proceeding clockwise, each player bids on how many points they believe their team can win during that hand. The minimum opening bid is usually set at 70 points and must increase by increments of at least five-points.
7. Determine trumps: Once bidding finishes, the highest bidder declares which color suit will be trump during this hand.
8. Capture kitty or nest: The high bidder adds the five kitty cards to their hand and then discards five cards face down on the table. They can’t discard any point cards (5, 10, 14, or Rook card) to the nest.
9. Begin play: The person to the left of the highest bidder leads with any card in their hand.
10. Follow suit: Moving clockwise, each player must play a card of the same suit as the card initially led if possible.
11. Play trumps: If a player doesn’t have a card in the suit led, they’re allowed to play any card — either trump card or an off-suit card.
12. Capture tricks: A trick is captured by the highest trump card played or by the highest-ranked card of the suit led, if no trumps are played. The player capturing the trick then leads for the next trick.
13. Understand point cards: The point values for cards are as follows – 14 (10 points), 10 (10 points), 5 (5 points), Rook card (20 points).
14. End of hand: Play continues until all nine tricks have been played, and no cards remain in hand.
15. Score and start new hand: Each team counts its points from captured tricks, and proceeds to start a new hand until an agreed-upon number of hands have been played or a team reaches a previously specified winning score.
Now that you know the basics of Rook, gather your friends or family members and start playing! With practice and strategy, you’ll soon become adept at this enjoyable game.
