How to Draw a Dog Face
Drawing a dog face can be fun and easy, whether you’re an aspiring artist or just want to have a good time. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll explore how to draw a dog face that’s both simple and realistic. Grab your favorite drawing supplies and let’s get started!
Step 1: Draw the basic shape
Begin by lightly sketching the basic shape of the dog’s head. Draw a circle for the skull and add two smaller circles on either side for the cheeks or jowls. Connect the cheek circles with lines to create the outline of the dog’s muzzle.
Step 2: Add in guidelines
To help with symmetry and placement, lightly draw guidelines dividing the circle into four sections. Add in a horizontal line through the center of each cheek circle for additional guidance.
Step 3: Draw the eyes
Using the guidelines, sketch in oval-shaped eyes midway along the vertical guideline within the skull circle. The distance between them should be approximately equal to one eye width. Remember that different breeds have different eye shapes, so adjust accordingly if you’re drawing a specific breed.
Step 4: Add facial markings
Give your dog character by adding markings around its eyes or on its forehead. Experiment with different shapes—like spots, patches, or lines—and see which one you like best!
Step 5: Create the nose
On your upper horizontal guideline, draw an upside-down triangle for the nose. Round off the corners to resemble nostrils and create a “Y” shape starting from near the bottom of your triangle to denote an opening.
Step 6: Draw in the mouth
Begin by drawing a line extending down from each side of the nose and connect these lines with a curved smile-like line at their base. Then draw two curved lines on either side of your mouthline, resembling parentheses but extending upwards to connect with the nose.
Step 7: Add in the fur and whiskers
Using short, rapid strokes, create the texture of fur around your dog’s face. Focus on the muzzle, jowls, and sides of its face for a realistic look. Don’t forget to add a few whiskers protruding outwards from close to its mouthline.
Step 8: Sketch the ears
Depending on your desired breed or personal preference, draw triangular or floppy ears on top of your head circle. Make sure to add a second layer to show interior flaps and add texturing for the fur as needed.
Step 9: Refine and finalize
Go over your sketch with darker lines, erase any unnecessary guidelines, and complete any fur detailing or shading. For additional depth, darken around the eyes or nose area.
Now that you’ve finished drawing your dog’s face, you can personalize it further with colors and shading, or even create other dog faces based on different breeds. Have fun and keep practicing—drawing a dog’s face is a skill that grows better over time!
