How to Build a PVC Hoophouse
A PVC hoophouse is an affordable, lightweight, and versatile structure for gardening. It can extend your growing season, protect plants from harsh weather, and even offer an ideal space to grow fruits and vegetables all year round. Building a PVC hoophouse is a straightforward DIY project that requires minimum tools and materials. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you build a sturdy PVC hoophouse for your garden.
Materials You’ll Need:
– PVC pipes (1 ½” diameter)
– Connectors (90-degree elbow, T-joints, X-cross, and 4-way connectors)
– Woven greenhouse fabric
– Ground stakes
– Zip ties
– Wooden stakes (optional)
– Measuring tape
– Hammer
– Hacksaw
– Scissors
Step 1: Plan the Hoophouse Size and Layout
First, decide the dimensions of your hoophouse. Consider factors like available space in the garden and the number of plants you wish to grow. A standard size for a small backyard garden is 8 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 7 feet high.
Step 2: Cut PVC Pipes to Size
Using a hacksaw, cut the PVC pipes into the appropriate lengths based on the dimensions you’ve planned:
– For lengthwise pipes (ridge beam), cut one pipe equal to the length of the hoop house.
– For widthwise pipes (hoops), cut enough pipes equal to half of the width (in this case, 2 feet each).
– For baseboards (both lengthwise and widthwise), cut four pipes equal to the dimensions.
Step 3: Assemble the Hoops
Connect two widthwise pipes with a T-joint connector at their center point. This will form a single hoop structure. Repeat this process for as many hoops as you need, usually one every 3-4 feet along the length of your hoophouse.
Step 4: Install the Hoops
Hammer ground stakes at both ends of each hoop, spaced evenly along the length of your hoophouse. Slide the base of the hoops onto the ground stakes, ensuring they are upright and secure.
Step 5: Add Lengthwise and Diagonal Support
Attach the ridge beam (lengthwise pipe) to the top center T-joint connectors for all hoops. Secure it with zip ties or PVC cement.
For added stability, connect diagonal support pipes from the ridge beam to each hoop using T-joints or X-cross connectors. Attach these diagonally across two opposite corners of each hoop, forming an X shape.
Step 6: Attach Greenhouse Fabric
Starting from one end, drape woven greenhouse fabric over the hoops. Ensure that there is equal overlapping on both sides and ends. Use wooden stakes to anchor down excess fabric at both ends and along the sides on the ground. Attach zip ties on each hoop joint to hold the fabric in place.
Step 7: Create an Access Door
At one end of the hoophouse, cut a slit in the greenhouse fabric as wide as your desired entrance size. Fold back and attach wooden stakes or PVC pipes to create makeshift doors that can be easily opened and closed.
Congratulations! Your PVC hoophouse is now ready to use. Customize it further by adding venting options for temperature control or install a removable side panel for easy access to your plants. With proper care and maintenance, your PVC hoophouse will serve you and your garden well for years to come.
