How to Make Hardtack: 15 Steps
Hardtack is a long-lasting, durable biscuit that has been used for centuries by travelers, sailors, and soldiers due to its ability to stay fresh for extended periods. It’s made from simple ingredients and requires no baking expertise. Here are 15 steps to make your own hardtack.
1. Gather ingredients: You will need 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of water, 1.5 teaspoons of salt, and an optional tablespoon of sugar.
2. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt (and sugar if you’re adding it). Mix well.
4. Slowly pour the water into the flour mixture, stirring constantly as you pour.
5. Continue mixing until a stiff dough is formed. It should be slightly tacky but not wet or sticky.
6. Knead the dough for about five minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
7. Sprinkle some flour on a clean working surface and roll out the dough to a thickness of approximately 1/4 inch (0.60 cm).
8. Cut the dough into squares or rectangles, measuring around 3×3 inches (7×7 cm).
9. Use a fork or skewer to poke several holes in each piece of hardtack to prevent them from puffing up during baking.
10. Place the cut pieces onto an ungreased cookie sheet or parchment paper-lined baking pan.
11. Place the cookie sheet with hardtack into the preheated oven.
12. Bake for approximately 30 minutes on one side, then carefully flip each piece over in order to evenly bake both sides.
13. Continue baking for an additional 30 minutes or until fully cooked and lightly browned.
14. Remove hardtack from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.
15. Once the hardtack is completely cooled, store it in an airtight container or plastic bags in a cool, dry place.
Your hardtack is now ready to be enjoyed as-is, or you can soften it by soaking it in water, broth, or milk before consuming. It’s particularly handy to have on hand during camping trips, long hiking journeys, or even as emergency food rations. With proper storage, hardtack can last for years, making it a practical and valuable addition to your pantry.
