Canon EOS 70D Review: A Fast Camera, But Not for Pixel Peepers
The Canon EOS 70D is a well-rounded DSLR camera that provides both speed and high-quality image capture. However, being released a while back in 2013, it may not completely please those who desire the granular detail that pixel peeping allows for.
For starters, let’s talk about the camera’s speed. The EOS 70D has a continuous shooting speed of 7 frames per second (fps). This makes it an excellent choice for capturing high-speed action, such as sports or wildlife photography. Additionally, its 19-point all cross-type AF system ensures sharp images, even when the subject is in rapid motion.
Its real innovation, however, comes from Canon’s proprietary Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, which significantly improves the speed and smoothness of autofocus in Live View and video modes. This technology creates two photo diodes for each pixel that simultaneously gather light and perform phase detection autofocus. What this means, in simple terms, is better accuracy and a quicker focus.
The quality of images produced by the EOS 70D is undeniably good with 20.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5+ image processor. Pictures are captured with accurate colors and an impressive dynamic range. It also performs admirably in low-light situations with an ISO range of 100-12800, which can be expanded to 25600.
However, users looking for extremely detailed images– the so-called “pixel peepers”, might find the EOS 70D less satisfying. While it captures high-quality images overall with its 20.2-megapixel sensor – which was impressive at the time of its release – newer models offer significantly higher resolutions.
Overall, the Canon EOS 70D is a robust camera that combines speed and high-quality imaging. It is perfect for those who value swift operation and good general results over extreme details. Despite being long in the tooth now compared to newer competitors in the market, it still has strong aspects worth considering particularly if you are not tremendously particular about extreme pixel accuracy.
