5 Ways to Cut a Watermelon
Watermelons are a delightful and refreshing treat perfect for those hot summer days. Knowing how to cut one, though, can be a little intimidating. However, there’s no need to worry! Here are five easy ways to cut a watermelon that will have you enjoying your slice in no time.
1. The Classic Wedge
This method is probably the most popular way to cut a watermelon. Start by slicing the melon in half from top to bottom. Place one half of the watermelon down on the cutting board with the flat side facing down. Then, cut it vertically into 1-inch thick slices, and then cross-cut into wedges. Repeat with the other half of the melon. Voilà – classic watermelon wedges!
2. Watermelon Sticks
Begin by cutting your watermelon in half (as in the first method). Slice each half horizontally and vertically into 1-inch sections. Keeping them stacked, turn the melon 90 degrees and repeat your cuts while keeping them parallel to your initial incisions. This will give you perfect watermelon sticks which are easy to grab and enjoy.
3. Melon Balls
For this technique, you’ll be needing a melon baller or small ice cream scoop. Halve your watermelon and start scooping out small balls from its flesh, making sure not to scoop too close to the rind. You can serve these melon balls in a fruit salad or simply as a fun finger-food.
4. Cube Cut
Slice off both ends of your whole watermelon so that each end has about an inch removed from it. Stand it upright on one of the flat ends and carefully remove the rind by carving downwards along the contour of the fruit with a sharp knife. Once you have removed all rinds, lay down your melon, and make vertical cuts from top-to-bottom to create 1-inch thick slices. Lastly, go on to dice each slice into cubes.
5. Watermelon Rings
Start by slicing your watermelon into round discs of about 1-inch thickness. Next, carefully remove the rinds from these discs, leaving only the juicy fruit behind. You can choose to leave these as complete rings, perfect for a unique presentation, or cut them into smaller wedges for easy individual servings.
Choose your favorite cutting method and get ready to savor the refreshing sweetness of watermelon throughout the warm season!
