4 Ways to Pop Sorghum
Sorghum, a nutrient-rich ancient grain, is gaining popularity as a versatile and gluten-free alternative to traditional grains. One of the most exciting ways to enjoy sorghum is by popping it, similar to popcorn. Popped sorghum makes for a tasty, healthy, and fiber-rich snack that can be prepared in various ways. In this article, we’ll explore four methods to pop sorghum at home.
1. Popping Sorghum on the Stovetop
The stovetop method is one of the simplest and most common ways to pop sorghum. To begin, heat 2 tablespoons of oil (such as coconut or vegetable oil) in a large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Add 1/2 cup of sorghum grains and cover the pot with a lid. As the grains heat up, shake the pot frequently to ensure even heating and prevent burning. Once you hear the sorghum start to pop, continue shaking until the popping slows down significantly. Remove from heat and let it cool for a minute before transferring to a bowl.
2.Popping Sorghum in a Hot Air Popper
A hot air popper usually used for popcorn can also effectively pop sorghum. Add 1/2 cup of sorghum grains into the chamber of your hot air popper according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Turn on the popper, place a large bowl under the spout to catch the popped sorghum, and wait for it to pop out into your bowl. As with most air poppers, not all sorghum grains may pop – but you’ll still have plenty of delicious puffed sorghum.
3. Popping Sorghum in an Electric Popcorn Maker
An electric popcorn maker designed specifically for popcorn can also work well for sorghum. Simply add the sorghum grains and oil (as recommended for popcorn) to the popcorn maker and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for popping time. As with any sorghum popping method, don’t be discouraged if not all grains pop.
4. Popping Sorghum in the Microwave
Although not as popular as other methods, sorghum can also be popped in the microwave using a microwave-safe bowl and lid or a specialized microwave popcorn popper. Mix 1/2 cup of sorghum grains and 2 tablespoons of oil together in your microwave-safe device, ensuring all grains are coated evenly with oil. Microwave on high for about 2-3 minutes, keeping an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t burn.
Regardless of which method you choose to pop your sorghum, once it’s ready, season it to taste with salt, spices, or other flavors you enjoy on traditional popcorn. Sorghum has a subtly sweet flavor that makes it a versatile base for sweet or savory options. Experiment with toppings like curry powder, nutritional yeast, or cinnamon sugar, and enjoy this ancient grain as a nutritious and satisfying snack alternative to traditional popcorn.
