Fishing involves various skills and techniques, and one vital aspect is learning how to properly snell a hook. Snelling is a method of securing the fishing line to the hook, which ensures that the line remains intact and provides a strong connection. It also promotes better bait presentation and consequently increases your chances of making a successful catch. In this article, we will discuss three different methods of snelling a hook: the traditional snell, the uni knot snell, and the sliding snell.
1. Traditional Snell
The traditional snell is a simple yet effective method for tying your line to the hook. Here’s how to do it:
1. Start by passing the end of your fishing line through the eye of the hook, leaving about 5-6 inches excess beyond the hook.
2. Hold both sides of the line against the shank of the hook.
3. Take the end of the line closest to you and start wrapping it around both lines running along the shank.
4. Continue wrapping at least 7-8 times, moving towards the eye of the hook.
5. After wrapping, pass the end of the line back through the eye from front to back.
6. Carefully pull on both ends of the line to tighten up your wraps against each other and snugly against the eye.
2. Uni Knot Snell
The uni knot snell offers slightly increased grip strength compared to traditional snells. To tie this knot:
1. Start by forming a loop with your fishing line, then pass it through the eye of your hook.
2. Lay both parts of your line parallel against each other along with shank of your hook.
3. Use one hand to hold both lines on place as you pinch them together against the shank.
4. With your free hand, start making wraps around both lines using the loop you created.
5. Wrap 7-8 times around the lines, moving towards the hook’s eye.
6. Gently pull on both ends of your line to cinch the knot tight against the shank.
3. Sliding Snell
For situations where you need some flexibility, the sliding snell is a great option. It allows your bait to slide on your leader for better presentation during certain fishing situations.
1. Pass your fishing line through the eye of the hook, and then wrap it around the shank one time.
2. Form a loop by bringing the tag end of your fishing line parallel to the mainline along with shank.
3. Hold this loop secure against the shank as you start wrapping both lines around it 6-8 times.
4. After wrapping, gently pull both ends of your line to tighten up versus each other.
5. Lastly, adjust your knot location along your hook shank according to how far you want the bait to sit back off from it.
Learning these three snelling techniques will not only improve your chances of securing a catch but also provide versatility in various fishing conditions. Master these knots and level up your angling game!
